BWAAAAAH!
I need a new book series to dig into
BWAAAAAH!
Ideally fantasy or sci fi
BWAAAAAH!
Something meaty
BWAAAAAH!
Taking a wee break from discworld
moontouched
i think you might find murderbot fun if you haven't tried it already!
BWAAAAAH!
I ready the first book and it was alright
moontouched
i've heard good things about uhhh..vorkosigan saga? as well? i havent tried that one yet though
moontouched
is there anything in particular you're looking for besides the fantasy/scifi, something Big
BWAAAAAH!
I’m really not sure is the thing
BWAAAAAH!
What’s Vorkosigan about?
moontouched
lots of space politics iirc
ReJenerator
have you read the Deed of Paksennarion?
BWAAAAAH!
I have
ReJenerator
what about the original Count of Monte Cristo?
MaxSalsa
Have you already read or watched Legend of Galactic Heroes?
MaxSalsa
I bring it up here because I've been reading it rather than watching it, and it's a good experience.
BWAAAAAH!
ReJenerator
: yup
BWAAAAAH!
MaxSalsa
: watched it
BWAAAAAH!
I think im leaning more fantasy right now
BWAAAAAH!
Or at least something with sword fights
dragon time
Vorkosigan is pretty good, it is primarily about a fellow who grew up on a rural space colony who is both extremely intelligent and extremely fucked up in the body and extremely good at fast talking his way into and out of lots and lots of trouble. You might like it but it's got more plasma space fights than sword fights
dragon time
You could read some Drizzt that's got mega sword fights
moontouched
drizzt has a lot of sword fights yeah
dragon time
In Other Lands for a guy who keeps trying to stop anyone have any sword fights which is extremely perilous. Pretty romance focused since Elliot falls in love with a number of people of various genders and species, man has some codependency issues.
dragon time
You've probably read Princess Floralinda and the Forty Flight Tower but if you haven't it's pretty great. Survival horror, a little.
dragon time
About a princess who is locked in a tower as part of a witches art project and is going to get out no matter what it takes
dragon time
I guess that's a standalone
dragon time
Oh, Tanya Huff! She mostly does urban fantasy but also some classic fantasy. Lots of adventure. Try The Fire's Stone or Sing The Four Quarters as a starting point. Horny but mostly in like a practical or plot driven way of that makes any sense
dragon time
Snaps fingers actually Bujold who does the Vorkosigan saga also has some more grounded one planet fantasy series
moontouched
if you're into animal fantasy you could try redwall because i recall that has a lot of wild fights in it
moontouched
and that has a LOT of books
moontouched
oh actually deltora quest
moontouched
deltora quest is fun
dragon time
Sharing Knife is about a disgraced farm girl and a disabled monster fighter who get married and team up to fight monsters
BWAAAAAH!
What’s the first Drizzt book?
dragon time
World of the Five Gods is less domestic worldbuilding more fantasy politics and also gods, starts with Curse of Chalion.
moontouched
depends on whether you want to read chronological or publishing order
moontouched
publishing order/the author's very first book trilogy is the crystal shard/streams of silver/the halfling's gem
moontouched
chrono/timeline order is homeland/exile/sojourn first, then crystal shard etc
dragon time
Oh here's a meaty one: firekeeper saga, first one is Through Wolfs Eyes, it's about a noble heir who was raised by magic wolves and keeps solving mysteries and foiling plots with her friends. Its kinda like if you took like 80% of the grim dark and 80% of the horny out of Game of Thrones
BWAAAAAH!
moontouched
: which do you think creates a better reader experience, chronological or publishing?
moontouched
hmm, i read in publishing order so i had a pretty good time that way
BWAAAAAH!
Solid
moontouched
but i like cheesy 90s fantasy and i didnt mind that the first books were clearly a bit rough due to author inexperience
BWAAAAAH!
I’ve never heard of Floralinda and the forty flights actually but I could handle some light horror I think
moontouched
theyre like dumb lil dnd adventures in book form at first, he only really starts to get super big on worldbuilding in homeland onwards
BattroidBattery
I've enjoyed Martha Wells, Arkady Martine, and Becky Chambers' novels
BattroidBattery
though Becky Chambers' scifi is very personal so if you're strictly looking for action adventure stories probably not going to do much for you
Echo
If you're good with webnovels instead of paper books, I still do recommend Pale Lights.
Echo
Otherwise, strongly seconding Lois Bujold.
BWAAAAAH!
What’s the pitch in Pale Lights?
Echo
Short version: fantasy post apocalyptic underground civilization full of weird god shit.
Echo
Long version, here's the summary page: Pale Lights
sailor bii
Vorkosigan Saga is very good
