I REALLY JUST DEEPLY WANT TO RP HER JUST TO PIN DOWN/FLESH OUT THE DIRECTION OF HER CHARACTER CUZ CANON DIDN'T DO THAT FOR ME

I have not had this urge in so long all my past few canon apps have been like "I like this character's canon themes and mentalities and stuff and want to try to recreate them faithfully and see where they go put in another environment with other people and stuff"

I do USUALLY app more minor/side characters where there is room to extrapolate a lot

I guess the closest comparison is fucking Rolan who I also was like "yeah the way this character entirely changed just because the reveal of the gap between his surface personality and his power levels already happened so there was no reason to keep writing his surface personality"

"so I came up with my own explanations for why he stutters sometimes and not others"

anyway so

Matsuri grew up with deeply non-present parents who were working all the time and essentially raised herself on the internet which is why she's a fucking nightmare

I think just bc of the sheer like ACTIVE DEMONSTRATION OF HOW MUCH HER PARENTS VALUED WORK. ENOUGH THEY WERE NOT HOME FOR HER OR HER YOUNGER BROTHER. she also in some ways is like working and making money is the way of the world

therefore she talks about being a fake sex worker like it's just a job bro

given she later has a younger brother and is pretty much HIS primary caretaker I think it can be assumed that part of her feeling the need to bring their family a third (NOT LEGAL) income source when they're already well-off is also like [this is how you take care of and provide for people and I need to take care of and provide for my younger sibling]

Yuzu was ACTUALLY the person who was most present to take care of her through her childhood which is kinda fucked when Yuzu is only a year older than her

even from the start tho Matsuri really also wants to protect and take care of YUZU and views her as too naive/innocent/etc

which creates kind of a contradictory manic energy in her shitheadery at the beginning where she simultaneously clearly wants Yuzu to dote on her and look after her but also the whole reason she goes into a possessive psycho spiral is bc she thinks Mei will fuck up Yuzu's life in the future

when Yuzu was allegedly dating boys Matsuri was totally hands off

did not resort to this stalker blackmailer behavior

or she would have like checked her phone at any point and figured out Yuzu didn't even have boyfriends and was just lying.

like it's also a shock of "I thought Yuzu was straight and gave up on liking her without trying but apparently she likes a girl which means she was actually possibly available to me and now I have to figure out what the fuck to do with that information???" and the confusion of that made her more inclined to be suspicious

AND THEN MEI ACTUALLY WAS KIND OF A FUCKED UP PERSON AND MATSURI JUST BLEW THAT UP TO 1000X THE SIZE IN HER HEAD AND INITIATED THE FUCKED UP OLYMPICS, A THING NO ONE ELSE WANTED

I mean actually Mei rolled with it. Yuzu didn't want this

but Matsuri viewed Mei as taking advantage of Yuzu, which tbh because she is so deeply cynical and misanthropic she probably would have found a way to interpret that to be the case no matter what

I lost my train of thought and got sidetracked

everything is about 'winning' and 'losing' to Matsuri

Yuzu scolds her for viewing relationships that way AND MATSURI ACTUALLY TRIES TO STOP USING THOSE WORDS IN REGARDS TO ROMANCE BC IT'S YUZU but she's still fundamentally in that headspace even much later on in the series

but funnily I think part of the reason Matsuri and Mei are so cool about everything later is because Matsuri acknowledges that Mei 'beat' her

she was initially furious about it but then swings around to "ok well since Mei IS superior to me that means her relationship with Yuzu absolutely has to work and go well"

she obviously disdains most people as being beneath her and honestly she looks down on Yuzu too, though obv with a lot more care involved

Matsuri's parents are shown to have gotten better at being present and involved in their kids lives offscreen tho they still work a lot

but I think that detail was added in as a way of being like "here is why Matsuri is relatively more level and growing compared to the start of the series"

because it sure as fuck isn't because of Yuzu (this isn't a dig at Yuzu Matsuri shouldn't be her responsibility anyway I'm just sad I wanted to see that relationship develop more and it simply did not)
