The thing is I'm leaning towards the Sonic the Comic characters and I'm worried people will be like "Look at her trying to play special snowflake versions of the charcaters"

Don't forget, I play several more obscure versions of Sonic characters: Tails from Dark Brotherhood, Manic, OVA Knuckles, and even a version of Manic AU'd into Sonic and the Black Knight. And now Nine. I don't think it will bother anyone that you have a more obscure version of Sonic.

I agree! I used to play OVA Tails myself and had plenty of fun! Plus your STC!Knuckles is such a pleasure to play against
