Adrift for 3 months, Australian and his dog lived on...

how amazing he survived but I don't understand how he can adopt out the dog that was with him. like that's gotta be one hell of a bond to just give up.

I can't imagine giving up a dog after 3 months let alone after they were my only companion in such life threatening circumstances.

Me neither. I guess if he travels a lot it might be best for Bella, but I'd find that hard to do.

I think I remember hearing that it is ridiculously hard to bring a dog into Australia - like loads of expensive red tape. Perhaps, since he found the dog in Mexico, he thought it best to keep him there?

He survived for three months eating raw seafood and what did they feed him on the boat? Tuna! LOL

Seriously though, Australia is really strict about bringing dogs there. They go into immediate quarantine for I think a month but it might be more.
Little tip though that someone I know did, they went to New Zeeland first with the dog and then to Australia. Apparently the regulations from NZ to Australia are more lenient.

Ah, true. I imported my dog to the UK once and it was a six month process where he had to get a different chip, a fresh rabies vax and then quarantine (at home with my mom) for six months, then another titre for the rabies level, then another check on arrival. And AUS is worse. I hadn't thought about that.

I used to watch this border patrol show because it has a lot about people bringing weird things through the airport. And one time this huge cargo ship got stopped at sea because they had mayo in Australian waters.

And people at the airport had to have all their wooden bracelets and stuff irradiated because it could potentially have wood eating bugs. They're not messing around with their indigenous species.

thaumata: so true. Plus I heard once that the airline gave out oranges on board and someone took it from the plane. It was confiscated at customs. They got it from the plane!

FREEarmStar🌟🎉 : yep, can't bring it in

I suppose it would be difficult. but I think I'd go through it all to keep them or at least try.

I would probably just move to Mexico haha

I had such dreams of moving to Australia when I was younger. Unfortunately for oh so many reasons it never happened. I’d still love to travel there but pricing has gotten OTT these days.

It’s an amazing story. Getting the dog from Mexico to Australia and through months in quarantine would be highly stressful for the dog. She’s going to a home that will look after her, that’s the main thing

Aussie here.. Mexico isn't on the very small list of approved countries, so unfortunately, importing Bella was never an option for him. Even if she were, the process would cost thousands & she would spend anywhere between 30 and 180 days in quarantine. It's very tough on the animal and Bella deserves to relax now. Hopefully, he can visit her in the future.

EvieMiles : I just read that Mexico isn’t on the list of approved countries! People are offering to help cover the costs to get her to Australia though so maybe she can get there in some roundabout way?
Ben Fogle offers to pay for Australian sailor and hi...

Boo 🐼 : that so kind of him. maybe they can be reunited

As nice as a happy ending would be, it's a biosecurity risk, and Bella could compromise the entire country's agriculture, wildlife, and economy, which is why they have such strict rules. It really is a difficult process for Bella, too. Hopefully, those funds can be used for him to return to Mexico, or to ensure excellent care for Bella in her new home.
