Trying to write down concepts from dream before they fade

a story and/or game that I was the co-author of

set in a bizarre fantasy world occupied by multiple races of fundamentally different nature

an unlikely bond of friendship between a human and a... something, I don't have a name

but a sapient race where individuals are under an inch tall

engaging in a game that also functions as war

which is old to the small race but new to humans

I don't know how both can play, the scale is confusing

but it involves taking and re-taking plots of territory over a sprawling arena

the game seems to have taken place in the sky, atop either natural or artificial floating arenas

in one, a human uses the event as an excuse to assassinate a rival human, then leaves by jumping off the edge

both as revenge for insulting the sanctity of the game and for killing one close to their human friend, the smallrace sends a dozen warriors to their death to guide a barbed dagger into the assassin's back in freefall

I don't know what smallrace looked like but they were not humanoid

humans dismiss them as unimportant due to their small size and are stunned by their ferocity

that's all I remember
