If you only do the cutscenes it's only about 2-3 hours, just saying if you want the story only!

and no the book is absolutely not necessary to the plot, it explains one (1) thing that you see in game and fills in a little bit of what the crew gets up to in the interim but it has no actual relevance to the game story
