I've been playing Persona 5 and similarly dealing with peculiar pronunciations of Japanese names. I have to wonder where in the process the pronunciation is decided upon?

like, if it's the licensor or the original studio that determines what they want the names to be.

That's a good question! I have to assume it's a collaborative thing between whoever is directing the loc and some portion of the original studio.

P5 is interesting, because I remember (at least the first release) there was some fuss about the direction attempting to match the subtle intonation of the Japanese pronunciation.

This was met with some mixed response, considering the actors are English and most people studying Japanese aren't even aware of these subtle intonation changes unless they really dig deep into it.

(Like, it's not really something that comes up in a standard JP class. It's kind of a specialization study.)

It must be tricky to contend with because JP has sounds that aren't in English so it's probably tough to have an English-speaking cast match them, and if I were directing, I'd probably want consistency above all else.

I'm just glad when the dub cast gets the JP pronunciation correct for names at all (the Detective Conan movie dubs are actually quite good about this, I was pleasantly surprised about it).

(I do recommend the movies!! They can't touch the overarching plot, so they tend to be nicely contained but high-concentrated Conan. My favorite is............ The Fist of Blue Sapphire.)
