They just, come with too much baggage, and it's transplanting cr into another setting and essentially using others as set pieces for a personal psl and idk it just rubs me the wrong way
I haven't seen many so I can't say much but the few I met were cool people? the way their characters changed from canon was interesting, but with CR, I don't think they recognized anyone in the new games then again they game from different game genres so that could have helped
In jamjars i think it's less of a problem of course since ppl can do their own things but it's still an issue of of bringing in a a whole plot from another game setting and it can be a bit alienating to talk about to any new cr you're trying to build
I did that once in a CRAU-only game since my character's arc ended in an open-ended way and it was a way to explore his further character development while letting him do plot stuff
All the same when I do run CRAU, I very much prefer that new game to be long running; partly for...the same reason you Banned it, a short game only has so much space to really throw around for character conversation, and the added baggage of a CRAU, including (perhaps even Especially) an abrupt closure case, ahhh...well. Takes too much space there :']
And managing recognising/not recognising previous CR can be a can of worms, which is why I like having excuses to Conveniently Forget certain things - not blanket amnesia, but cherry picking
both from the perspective of the person CRAUing into a game and as a castmate receiving a CRAU... on the one hand it can make for a new and interesting dimension to interactions, on the other hand it can abruptly and unexpectedly break established canon relationships
i had considered a CRAU at one point and that was largely bc two games i had apped in with the same cast closed abruptly within 3 months and i didn't want to have to go thru the same conversation with castmates for the third time in a row LMFAO............
but personally im not a fan of doing it myself, it feels like im bringing other game baggage into my current game. as far as playing with CRAUs, i don't think i'd mind as long as i can communicate w/ the other player
I know that off the top of my head, Reira has the chance to become an exception inn my books- largely because of like...how different a character she is now? She comes packaged with an easy out for the past cr trouble though, and from there uh
tho I also feel like... if your CRAU version of the character is so intensely different from canon maybe you should weigh that against what that would do to canon mates (if you play obscure fuckos it matters much less lol)
The way I've played CRAU is I haven't had my characters know or recall people if they 1) aren't being played by the same players in the new setting 2) don't want to be told about their pg counterparts and it works just fine, it ends up being like new CR. However for characters who originally had trouble adjusting to a setting, it helps to get them-
acclimated faster, but I usually only do it if say a game shut down all of a sudden or I didn't get to wrap up an arc in the previous game and the players are still interested in keeping that going.
I think nowadays I just like starting fresh if a game closes early I'm just like oh well and prefer not to force the story arc. Or if I do want it, take it to psl land.
i only did CRAU once and that was putting someone from a Pokemon game into another pokemon game and well, i felt like it gave them an initiative that they wouldnt have otherwise? it was useful and a fun experiment but I probably wouldnt do it again unless i really really wanted to explore missed potential
The big main reason I went CRAU for one of my current characters, knowing fully that she's p wildly different from canon, was bc I wanted to explore those difference and the internal conflict it gives her in a structured setting. I've never had much luck with PSLs and as much as I'd LOVE castmates to mutually ??? with it's very unlikely to happen
it was mostly because I had taken them out of a 6 month campaign where the group got the good end, so I wanted to explore the post-canon life of that character and it ended up being quite fun
yeah the only reason I did a crau in snek for jon is because I looked over the taken list and noted he did not already meet/know a single character in game so I wasn't gonna be bringing any weird crau baggage. just his development from sidereal and he's also not someone who openly talks about himself much so it hasn't been that big a thing
I would never do CRAU myself but I don't like, hate it when people do it, even if they have past CR with who I play I can roll with it and find ways to do things with that and it can be fun but it has to be with ppl I already trust with that.
Stuff like "that's nothing, in [previous game] we did x and y" i find it very annoying and difficult to deal with ICly because it's like ... okay ... but that doesn't change the fact my character is upset RIGHT NOW. But fortunately, that has been less and less of an issue
illicit sprinkl
: see that's where I think the disconnect is, ppl want structured rp settings for things that work better in psls. The lesson here is we all need to get better at psls!!!
I personally don't have anything against PG/CRAU, but I have rarely if ever felt the need to do it myself. That being said, my one caveat is if your PG/CRAU had CR with a version of my character but NOT the one I am currently playing, even if I was the same player of the version in that game, please talk to me first before we play the My Character Recognizes
That said the most charming crau experience I had was when Ari dera and I played Mikey, raph, and Leo in a gemworld game and we had a crau Donnie from mlp world and a grimdark future donnie
shinyboo。
: belated I do see the value in them getting settled faster/skipping all the standard woouah how we get here dialogue, cuz that can be tedious
not only do we need to factor in in play relationships and canon relationships we now have to factor in every iteration of every teammate yours had or ship yours had in the previous game and to me it's just exhausting unless it's played very very carefully
Also belatedly I know I'm in the minority but I dislike doubles u-uand weirdly not for myself, just like, I have seen too many ppl get self conscious over who is better, am I ooc, etc etc and I ain't got time for that
Also I don't, want cr with the same characters twice in one game lmao. Like even if they are au are they truly diff enough to have a new experience at the same time?? Idk
(I think also with doubles it's kind of like... in most instances, if your character interacts with one of them, is there really any reason to seek out CR with the other??)
like AS A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE THAT WAS DONE CAREFULLY AND DID NOT IMPACT PLAY FOR ANYONE SO WAS FINE ULTIMATELY BUT COULD HAVE GONE WRONG IF PPL WERE LESS COOL
I recently felt this for the first time basically and was like 🤔???????????????????? But it was like. Not a serious desire just a ‘hey you COULD’ and it clearly became a giant thing for me to try and dissect
yeah I think ultimately to me it comes down to who does it rather than a blanket ruling because I have seen people be very cool about it but also others who. were not.
i cannot deal with pg/crau anymore lmao. i used to be more flexible about it but i have now had the 'pg/crau castmate that was SO crau'd it was like interacting with a total alien and not the original character at all but they still expected my character to treat them like nothing had changed'
the only time I've considered a PGAU is ironically a character who comes from a game that had so many doubles it was a running joke so his blanket assumption is already "I have no idea who this version is! I'm just not going to make assumptions! I WILL BE THE LEAST AWKWARD ABOUT THIS!!" (and also he's obscure so what castmates lol)
i did used to like it for 'allows you to finish arcs you didn't in other games' and have used pg myself but i think now i'd just want to psl finishing the arc tbh
My desire for PG AU Rook is very much like the direction things took after he got ‘back’ to canon that now makes him Rook from a different house than canon. I don’t think I’ve actually played pg in a serious game before though, trying to think on play history.
And looking back I think that was a detriment to the game cuz it caused it to take a while to really find an identity other than 'au and doubles jungle'
idc if others crau but for me personally every time i tried to do it, it was without most of my cr from the previous game so i was like... why am i doing this. what's the point. THIS ISN'T FUN. so i don't think i'm gonna try anymore.
i'm personally on team "let games get their footing before PG/CRAU is allowed" but also very biased because i in fact have a few characters who i want to give them a more satisfying conclusion/end (Joker...)
i like doubles when they're aus, canon aus or otherwise like i've had cr with both a regular atsushi and a BEAST novel atsushi from bsd and those two are wildly different
i think whether they are allowed or not is very setting-dependent, and i agree that for teamgames it can be bad especially at the start when you want everyone to be blind to everything
what snek did at first to allow pg but avoid the problem was "OK YOU ARE UNDER A MAGICAL NDA, anything your character tries to say about their pg to anyone who isn't from the same place will be censored so they can't share their expertise with others"
personally i get super attached to my character arcs and i enjoy getting to continue their developments across games, like for example my personal timeline for shikis in sabrathusia was that shiki (girl) went to sabra while shiki (boy) died and went to thusia and then halfway through sabra he gets revived and then both go to sabra good end together
bc the whole "you already have your cr and everyone else is there as part of the setting" is something i have seen happen with casts sometimes, you don't even need pg to alienate others
leo ph is the other character i've had across a bunch of games and tbh it's super fun for me bc he canonically is supposed to live like 100 years, so for every game he just grows more and more old man tired
but if someone were to play it as like "OH MY GOD HOW COULD ELLIOT NIGHTRAY NOT REALIZE THIS LEO HAS CHANGED AND MELLOWED OUT, YOU'RE A BAD ELLIOT!!!" that's not cool? regardless???
PHONY
: yea ia it's player dependent cuz it def can be done well!! But it's like, when I see a pg even from someone I know and trust and love I can't help but immediately think ',oh they know what they about they are valid but probably I shouldn't invest too much cuz they already have an arc they're invested in'
for the specific trauma example it's also -- i apped a character that is nigh untraumatizable bc he went to celestrials first and i wanted someone sturdy bc i get tired of playing characters being sad and miserable all the time
I have complicated feelings on pg because I witnessed a game where pg was not allowed and characters came in as amnesiacs still have the same metagaming problems as games that did allow pg
another snek example is how early on dokja wanted his team to protect geto's team and work together due to pg and everyone (geto included) looked at that and said "fuck that", icly
But yea overall I have def gotten more bad vibes feels from pg than canon encounters but not so much that never ever interact!! Just I will always be wary now
yeahhhh im more psychological/emotional damage. thats why bonding things wreck wolfwood more PLEASE LET HIM GO BACK TO THE FAMILIAR HELL OF VIOLENCE Lily + Vash: shhhh no. its time for soft and gentle
IT WAS JUST FRUSTRATING CUZ IT WAS LIKE. I REALLY WANTED TO PLAY SOMETHING SEPARATE FROM THIS BUT OK I GUESS WE'RE BACK IN THE TEAMNESIA CINEMATIC UNIVERSE NOW
yeah like. all mods can really do is try to set up player expectations in the right direction, but there will still always be some people who disregard that when they app
yeah I think approach is really the big deal because like. there is a big difference between playing out "I'm doing PGAU because I want to keep tagging the same people" vs "PGAU made my character funky in a cool way and I want their journey to continue in a new setting with new CR"
then again they game from different game genres so that could have helped
Takes too much space there :']
I know that off the top of my head, Reira has the chance to become an exception inn my books- largely because of like...how different a character she is now? She comes packaged with an easy out for the past cr trouble though, and from there uh
ngl ryslig is basically just Her Canon Now oAo
(it really does ultimately come down to if the setting is proper for it though huh...)
if the players involved were anything less than flawless in execution, that could go SO BAD
like i've had cr with both a regular atsushi and a BEAST novel atsushi from bsd and those two are wildly different
Lily + Vash: shhhh no. its time for soft and gentle
