Mingjue really really loved his dad. Like, worshiped him.

Like you can tell with how driven he is with the sunshot campaign that his drive for his fathers revenge is more than just out of fillial responsibility

family means so much to mingjue, as little as he outwardly expresses it, he takes great pride in his family

the legacy, the heritage, and those that he still has. His emotional attachments run deep

and I feel like it runs that deep because of the deep love he had for the family that raised him

he literally held onto a decade long vendetta and then started a war, for his dad

he probably based everything he wanted to be as a person over how he perceived his own father

Sanzo also really really loved his dad.

Koumyou was probably the deepest emotional attachment Sanzo ever had. The only person Sanzo ever opened himself to emotionally. Like Mingjue, he worshiped Koumyou as a child. Respected more than he respected anything else.

And like Mingjue, it destroyed him when he had to witness his fathers murder

And much like Mingjue he spent the majority of his life trying to avenge his father because of it.

But, although Mingjue built an emotional wall after his fathers death to be strong for his clan and family, Sanzo destroyed the bridge to his emotions completely because of it

he went the stupid rout of equating loving someone = eventual pain and weakness and he simply decided that he doesn't ever want to feel that vulnerable ever again

Gojyo on the other hand... has a really complicated relationship in regards to his father

since Gojyo is a child of infidelity, I think there will always be that lingering off handed question if his father ever actually loved him or not

but since both his father and his mother took their lives when he was far too young he will never actually get closure or understanding of how it was his father ever felt for him

combined with the fact that they tried to take him with them when it happened only echoes that big pool of self doubt and pain within himself

there will always be that lingering question of "was I the reason they did it" especially considering what he is and how society views those like him

and that combined with how horrible and cruel his step-mother, his fathers actual wife, was to him, probably only solidified that sentiment

so... he chooses not to think about it. because thinking about it would only mean drowning himself in booze to hopefully stop

the story goes into the family lives of a lot of the characters and... I think he is one of the very very few characters in which you hear nothing in canon in regard to his background before the story.
