So like here's my thing about the discourse about FF16 and the loss of the traditional Final Fantasy
EsperBot
It does kind of bum me out that FInal Fantasy doesn't mean the same thing it did when I was a kid. I really like those old games!
EsperBot
But, like
EsperBot
this isn't new
EsperBot
the last time a game I would consider to be a traditional FF came out the twin towers were still standing
EsperBot
(which was FFX, for the record)
EsperBot
FF12 was a weird thing that ran the fuck away from turn-based RPG gameplay in favor of a weird management sim thing
EsperBot
FFXIII was even less recognizable
EsperBot
FFXV was straight up a bad action game
EsperBot
FF7-R was also a bad action game although I realize that the 'bad' there is a hot take
EsperBot
So like, eprsonally, this is a loss that I have already sufficiently mourned
Levi
Going back even further, the ATB system of FFIV to IX is a big stretching of the idea of a turn based combat system
EsperBot
I wonder if the reason it's kicking up such particularly strong feelings now is that this is the first time since the transition really kicked in with FFXIII (FFXII at least dressed it up a bit more in the old trappings) that the game has actually looked, you know, good owm its own terms, lol
Levi
since real time was an element, battles will still continue if you don't input commands for your party, and ATB lets you delay turns and such in real time
連続犬
I disagree with your opinions on 7R but yeah this gets into the thing I've said in Hannah's plurk
連続犬
pretty much every FF past 10 has been Weird
EsperBot
yeah even in the SNES era the series was kind of tugging at the reins of turn-based gameplay
連続犬
11 and 14 are MMOs, 12 is what you said, 13 and 15 were pushing hard in the action game direction from the jump
連続犬
it's legitimately been a long ass time since there's been a final fantasy where the core mechanics weren't a bit strange and unconvential
Levi
I also really don't like the idea of "traditional" Final Fantasy because that doesn't really exist when every entry in the series changes things up from the previous entries as well
EsperBot
I think that that is true to an extent but there's also a lot more design continuity between pre-11 FFs than there is after that
EsperBot
it's not Dragon Quest where the combat system is literally the same from game to game but it's variations on a theme
Levi
anyway when people say "I want traditional FF" like 9 times out of 10 what they're really saying is "I want another game that plays like FF7 or FFX"
連続犬
yeah the continuity between mechanics is nonexistent between 11-15
EsperBot
Personally what I want is Bravely Default with better writing lmao
Levi
I will never not get salty about how Bravely Default has a very clear place where you can literally see the budget run out and how the game abruptly falls off a cliff
EsperBot
yeah
EsperBot
and like
EsperBot
they didn't actually need to pad it that hard!?
Frozen Time
BD just stretching out like taffy at the end there
EsperBot
the amount of content in the game was Fine
Levi
and yeah it's like, the games you want exist! They may not have the Final Fantasy name attached to it, but it's mechanically what you want
EsperBot
you didn't need to reprise it three fucking times
Levi
they didn't even tune the difficulty of those fights to match your party's increased powerlevels, you're just curbstomping the fights again
Levi
and also everyone just became stupid (secret ending where Agnes stands up for herself best ending btw)
Awe
Bravely Default with better writing kinda just sounds like Bravely Second to me. It might be sillier in places but it’s very earnest in a way I find charming
Awe
And it has Wizard, which rules
