[TOTK] Not really a spoiler spoiler but I'll put the info in the plurk just in case. I find it to be helpful fucking knowledge re: the Depths.

the Depths are a literal mirror of the greater world map. mountains are the depths valleys, rivers are the insurmountable walls, shrines are light roots, goddess statues are the Bargainer statues etc etc.

basically if you get kind of lost, you can use the greater world map to help orient you a little bit. and if you need shrines or light roots you can kind of reverse engineer a bit depending on what you've explored more.
