While Ai and Evie adorably share bedtime stories and noticing Evie seems to have a crush on her trainer, I remembered A City With No People from Chobits and, although the anime doesn't make clear that Chii & Hideki's relationship is chaste by design (otherwise, he'd literally erase all her memories/reset her), that still shines through in these storybooks.
bashouhear me out, even though Chobits is notorious for suggestive humour and such and it's a romance (albeit a chaste/asexual one, ironically enough!), which is different, the concerns here do remind me of your Bashou's in the fic when he couldn't make sense of why Buson wouldn't want to live with him.
As opposed to a woman he'd be in an intimate relationship with, etc. Just looking for one person [(Atashi) the bunny representing Chii has only just that one person in this world, even if he might have others] that'd accept them as they are and not demand what they cannot give.
... I think that might be one of the biggest appeals to Chobits despite it being, otherwise, so much like something I wouldn't watch as a sex-repulsed asexual, ffff.
I saw it young enough to miss a lot of the suggestive gags, too, and zeroed in on just the romance and pretty outfits, fff, which I think was fairly common when it came out. The children's book as depicted in the anime [so nothing suggestive here!!]
