[meme] Character moms!

Dragons Dragons
Anna has an on-screen mother who honestly thought she was doing the right thing. It's implied that she suffered "great misfortune" after she lost the previous GRANBELM and wanted to free her children from having to struggle in vain to live up to their much more powerful ancestors and prove themselves to the other old families.

Dragons Dragons
Unfortunately, she and everyone else in the situation was raised in mage society with the idea that natural talent is the only thing that matters, and doubly unfortunately, that is true because Magiaconatus stacks the deck in favour of whoever it decides is the most worthy candidate.

Dragons Dragons
So she honestly thinks it's a mercy to try and redirect Anna away from the magic she's spent her life pursuing and tries to adopt Shingetsu for that purpose because Shingetsu is very obviously the chosen one.

Dragons Dragons
Shingetsu even tells Anna, "Unlike me, you have people who love you," which infers that even if Anna's mom was trying to be a parent to Shingetsu, she screwed her up too by making it obvious that she wanted her as an heir first and a child second.

Dragons Dragons
Anyway, Anna finds out that her mom had only humoured her idea that she was destined to be a great mage as a child and she's actually just as untalented a mage as her mom thinks, and knows that her mom believes that all Anna's hard work, dreams, and dedication won't make up for that, because she raised Anna with those ideals as well.

Dragons Dragons
So she tries to kill her, and then that gets undone when Anna dies and her existence is cosmically retconned, and Mrs. Fugo is now Rosa's mom and probably gets along a lot better with her because Rosa never cared about magic anyway and only ever wanted to be accepted.

Dragons Dragons
Maki has a mother she barely speaks to. She means well and tried to support Maki in her failed acting career, and wants Maki to reconcile with her dad.

Dragons Dragons
Kokoro's parents are never mentioned, but we know they raised her to view the family legacy with grave importance. We also know there is a big age gap between her and her brother (she would've been a toddler when he vanished at 19) so draw from that what you will.

Dragons Dragons
Velda's mom is poor and works at the witch equivalent of Walmart. She loves her daughter but can't deal with how weird, disruptive, and heavily undiagnosed-autistic-coded she is and worries openly that if she doesn't "stop being odd" that will bring down consequences on her and the family.

Dragons Dragons
This is a major point of contention because Velda knows that 1) she can't stop anyway and 2) if she devoted all her time to masking she'd spiral, life would suck even more, and people wouldn't stop bullying her anyway!

Dragons Dragons
That aside, though, Velda's mom is still one of the better parents in this verse.

Dragons Dragons
Rinku's mom is a scientist who toted her around the world in pursuit of the study of beetles. She and the rest of the family are just as exuberant and weird as Rinku is.

Dragons Dragons
Dana's mom is one of the many relatives crowded into their small house. She works a lot and isn't around much, and she expects Dana to take care of all the kids (probably also expected Scott to do it before he moved out, and still expects Scott to help with anything remotely in their wheelhouse), which is a big part of why Dana is Like This.
