[tpp] this is an appreciation plurk for how tpp fandom got legible names out of weird inputs for the hosts

how we looked at these and got names is beyond me

like nqpppnl - Napoleon

BBBBBA - Barbie

2z - Tulio

some of them take from not just the way the name is typed but other story elements, like in Emerald, trolls forcing a bunch of resets after naming our character at the start left us with "A," so her full name, "Camila A. Slash," came from two other hosts who were lost with the resets, Camila (picked from the default name list) and /.

Love it, honestly. inspired.

FireRed gave us another A and so she was Alice because first randomized playthrough = Wonderland jokes, and Smith came from Granny Smith apples (early scrapped lore before fandom set on the "Bill's daughter" idea was that she was a senile grandma telling misremembered stories).

a lot of repeated-letter names: KKKB = Kiki Kiba, pp = Pepe, FEEFFrr = Fifi, Gg113ktyhh4w = Gigi Kettlewell, and then there are Bibi and Baba and I'm definitely forgetting a lot we have seventy full runs not even counting the side games what is this

TPP names always remind me of my very first charmander which I affectionately refer to as Keysmash nowadays because I started to nickname it but hit the wrong letter and couldn’t figure out how to backspace so it ended up just a incomprehensible string of letters and symbols and I don’t think I ever changed it?

AGGGNNV - Agony, in part because all his mons looked edgy and grumpy and in part because this run was particularly set upon by trolls who got us stuck constantly and then outnumbered the actual players to the point that they would sabotage us even in Democracy. So his character was either an unhinged villain or an emo edgelord depending on who you asked.

We later revisited that romhack with anti-troll measures and restarted with a protag named Teru, whom we decided was the same guy getting another chance at life after the timeline reset again.

it's wild to me that tpp is even still going

the fandom is small now but stubbornly persisting despite all the "what do you mean it didn't fail halfway through the second run?" we get

I ... remember they replaced Red’s team on Mt Silver to reflect the first run’s elite four team and everyone losing their GD (heh my phone autocorrected to GS. Appropriate.) minds about it? But that’s as far as I recall clearly.

yeah! they've done a lot of stuff like that, editing previous hosts into romhacks especially for anniversary games which are sometimes romhacks made specifically for tpp

like for heartgold they put alice and her team in in place of red, multiple runs of bw and associated hacks of it have had past hosts in postgame tournaments, anniversary games have past hosts all over the place especially chatty crystal
