[fandom, colorism]
Just like it's racist to make POC characters lightskinned when they're depicted with dark skin, it is also racist to make the assumption that a POC person or character has to be darker skinned to be POC.

these are both indicative of systemic racism, but the second is worse in some ways because when you do that shit you are telling us WE DON'T COUNT/CAN'T BE REAL.

yep... this bothers me a lot bc it usually leads to very problematic thinking

𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒 : there's this really shitty post comparing the darkest version of America Chavez to a funko pop of the MCU version and people are talking about how it sucks they cast a white girl to be an afro-latina.

Xochitl Gomez is Mexican-American and has indigenous heritage.
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
yeah um, what? lmao
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
i understand that people want to be represented by a darker-skinned poc, like
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
i do agree that i would prefer once they cast storm that she not be as light-skinned as her previous castings but....

America Chavez is. how to put it.
July, July
It weirds me out and also kind of scares me
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
like. these are still. people who exist and deserve representation and not to b attacked for the color of their skin

Because it's unconsciously following this racist push and narrative that people from Latin America are Brown that's been increasingly and heavily pushed since 2015.
July, July
Because that is what it is! Conservatives have been super pushing this idea and concept and besides the fact it's just gross in so many levels like
July, July
I have also been in turn experiencing more people denying that I could possibly be a Latina because of this, and this isn't just a me problem.
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
yeah :-( and honestly i feel like these people just...

𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒 : And yeah; it absolutely sucks that they do this sort of thing with characters who are depicted with dark skin/gradually lighten them up, especially BPOC but with the Latino characters thing it's going the other way and it's insideous.
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
need to meet more... people? in general?
𝕨𝕣𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟🎄𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒
and base less of their assumptions on stuff they've been told
i stay silly :3
things that make me feel awkward about referring to myself as latine for 400, please
July, July
i stay silly :3 : For real. And like, I know when people aren't only going off of skin color I do not pass; we used to road trip to Florida every summer and stops we did in the Deep South on I-10 I would get mean mugged at by white people who could tell I Was Not A Good White Child.

It's also just weird and awkward when you come across a fan artist who consistently illustrates characters as much darker than they are in canon and it can maybe pass off as "oh that's just their style, they like higher contrast " and then you see their depiction of a white character and it's no. they just think POC characters are supposed to all be dark.
i stay silly :3
Like, it's very specific to a certain fandom but the way Lyse Hext gets called a white savior so much in the FFXIV fandom frustrates me so much
i stay silly :3
like no she was born there, she grew up there partially. Yeah, she comes back as big deal adventurer and gets put in a leadership spot but her being lightskinned doesn't make her a white savior!!! That's her home! And her people!!!
