[thinking about fiction] So Honor Harrington is a series of military sci fi books about recreating the feeling of 19th century navel warfare in space
Gabiluzbad
The way spaceships work, the most efficient attack strategy is to give the other guy a broadside and try to maneuver around so he can’t give YOU a broadside
Gabiluzbad
The story follows the career of naval officer Honor Harrington, a tough cool lady with nerves of steel who gets in a lot of exciting battles
Gabiluzbad
I only read the first few books before getting distracted
Gabiluzbad
In the early series there is a conflict within the community of naval officers and admirals and such about the future of warfare
Gabiluzbad
The “new school” says that research and development of new technology and weapons should be a priority because it gives you an undeniable edge over the other guy if you have bigger sexier guns
Gabiluzbad
The “old school” says that development of new technology and weapons should be slow and cautious and aimed towards fitting new weapons into pre existing tactical roles
Gabiluzbad
Because
Gabiluzbad
If you just mindlessly go after the biggest and most unstoppable guns you can
Gabiluzbad
Then wars become brutal slug fests with enormous casualties and collateral damage
Gabiluzbad
Better to have well trained professionals going at each other in limited conflicts so we don’t end up going the full warhammer 40,000
Gabiluzbad
Ultimately, the new school wins, because the old school requires an agreement between both sides to hold back their true power
Vehrec
there is a quote from someone reading these books that may make you glad you stopped reading
Vehrec
and it's so big it's time to break out the Plurk Paste.
Gabiluzbad
And this core struggle of “keep your conflicts limited or there’s unnecessary damage to both sides”
Gabiluzbad
Is repeated, in WILDLY different forms
Gabiluzbad
In Touhou Project and Heaven Will Be Mine
Gabiluzbad
With the spell card rules of the former and the action figure metaphors of the ship selves in the latter
Gabiluzbad
Vehrec : “Mary sue” is a stupid way to complain about characters with deeply sexist roots
Gabiluzbad
But MAN
Gabiluzbad
Honor Harrington is SUCH a Mary sue
Vehrec
this post was made 8 years ago, so it was in much broader use back then.
Vehrec
and when you can say `Admiral Honor Harrington sets out to win the day from her flagship, the stupendous Honor Harrington-class Superdreadnought Honor Harrington.` then maybe squint a little harder at your character.
Gabiluzbad
Anyway
Gabiluzbad
I think the whole problem is an interesting one to grapple with
