The way I kind of parse the way gender roles work in FE4 is that it is fine and acceptable for women (esp noblewomen) to learn martial skills, if they wish to, but it's not compulsory (the way it is for men) and also of course you are going to be a wife and mother as well

so Ethlyn learned how to swordfight because Crusader heir, but learned how to heal because until her marriage she would be acting as Sigurd's lieutenant if / when he rode out to fight, and that became her role towards Quan once she married him

(FE4 is. very definite. that there are gender roles and that 'female' is the subordinate gender but it is 'subordinate but you can also use a sword')
