book recs please!

burg summer
I like character driven stuff about problematic people (no violence against animals or kids tho please)

burg summer
a lot of YA doesn’t grab me tho there have been exceptions, most notably the hunger games

burg summer
also historical fiction, SFF if the world building isn’t too dense, memoirs about weird stuff

burg summer
not a fan of romance unless it’s fucked up in some major way

burg summer
just like. gimme morally questionable people and hard situations lmao

just donna
have you done the Ancillary series?

el axo
if you haven't done Gideon the Ninth yet I think you'd enjoy it, the world building is much more fantasy than sci-fi and everyone makes stupid choices

el axo
the main romances involve dead people, one way or another

burg summer
Haven’t heard of Ancillary! Gideon is on my to-investigate list

burg summer
I’m bout to go renew my library card so I can check out ebooks for Night Reading

just donna
ancillary justice is the first, then there's two sequels, it's a character driven space opera

burg summer
I’m working on The City of Brass which is pretty good so far but I borrowed a paper copy and it’s murdering my eyes in the dim nursery

just donna
then I recently cracked into Swordspoint, it's an older book but it's kind of a... low fantasy/comedy drama of manners, if you like Johnathan Strang and Mr Norell I think you'd like it, it's got some awful people in it hahah

burg summer
Oh that sounds very my vibe

just donna
the city in it was a big inspiration for Ankh-Morpork so that speaks highly of it I think. the one sequel Ive read so far ... was not so much my vibe though

koke
max gladstone's craft sequence is my usual recommendation

burg summer
Oh shit idea, I love discworld

burg summer
Ideal*

burg summer
just donna
I’ve started Swordspoint and I’m really digging it

burg summer
Full of shitheads just the way mama likes it

just donna
I feel like there's so boys you could really get in to. I just can't believe this book existed since like, I've been alive and no one TOLD ME

burg summer
a slew of rowdy dirtyboys

burg summer
finished Swordspoint, loved it

burg summer
i’ve got a hold on Gideon the Ninth and should have it in, checks, 13 weeks lol

man get out
read the traitor baru cormorant if you haven't

man get out
it's about a woman growing up in a colonised society who decides she's going to use the master's tools to break the master's house but she gets pretty fucked up along the way

man get out
also it's extremely gay

burg summer
INTERESTING

burg summer
I have investigated the two series recommended and I think I'm just not feeling A Series rn but I haven't eliminated the possibility

burg summer
I'm gonna read a memoir next but I'll try Traitor Baru Cormorant after

Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
I thiiiink I recommended Nice Dragons Finish Last aka the Heartstriker novels but if I haven't, I do

Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Modern/future tech and lifestyle but what if the world also had to contend with nature spirits, magical beasts in the sewers, and dragons who are senators and have their own talk shows. The main character is a dragon named Julius whose mom basically owns North America. He is very bad at being an evil conniving power hungry dragon.

Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
So his mom, who is the literal worst, curses him to remain in human form until he proves himself, or she'll eat him. So Julius immediately hooks up with a girl who can talk to ghosts who might have connections to the mob oops

Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Anyway, they anger ancient and powerful spirits a lot, Julius has a mess of brothers and sisters, some of them suck while others are EXTREMELY FUCKING COOL, they include Bob the seer and Chelsie the enforcer and just. Wait until you meet Amelia.

Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Anyway. I love these books I hope more people read them

Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
first book on amazon

el axo
I would warn against Baru rn

el axo
a lot of bad shit happens to kids in the beginning

burg summer

burg summer

burg summer

el axo
