[XIV] itp: tanking philosophy
Levi
Did two duties back to back where the encounters were made 10x harder due to bad tanking positioning
Levi
First was Yiazmat in Ridorana and the second was Cloud of Darkness in E9N
Levi
Yiazmat a lot of people got fucked by magnets because the main tank pulled Yiazmat over to one side instead of keeping it in the center
Levi
Cloud of Darkness was just 100% a disaster because the tank kept turning them
Levi
and also because I was somehow far and away top DPS on DNC-
Levi
in no universe should DNC be outdamaging SAM, NIN, and MCH
Levi
When I tank I am always super particular about where and how I face bosses I get very annoyed if a boss does a half room cleave and the aoe indicator shows me it's ever so slightly tilted
Levi
that is when I'm tanking, I'm more forgiving of other tanks being slightly off, but not like, 45 degrees off
Levi
turning Cloud of Darkness is dangerous because a bad angle makes mechanics harder to avoid and also can hit people who aren't expecting it, the SAM in our party got yeeted like 5 times because of bad Art of Darkness angles
Levi
For tiles in normal, I will actually move back instead of to the side to avoid a falling tile, I do it during the GCD roll to avoid losing DPS, Cloud of Darkness doesn't move, but they do turn
Levi
(also itp: me constantly reminding myself Cloud of Darkness is nonbinary)
Levi
At the same time I also realize it's like, unreasonable for me to expect people to know how to face and position an enemy all the time
Levi
A lot of bosses make it easier by having set locations they will move to in order to execute mechanics and in most cases, "in the middle, facing a cardinal direction" is a good way to do it
Levi
"how to optimize boss positioning for maximum efficiency and convenience" is something I put too much effort into, I am that guy who brings Captain Madison to the dog pen door in Sastasha
TENtacle :3c
yeah i sometimes see some really ??? tanking where even the very basic "keep the boss facing north as much as possible" doesn't happen
Levi
fights where the boss moves to random places constantly or will put down bad persistent puddles also mean I have to decide on the fly where to move a boss to
Levi
and sometimes there's like, no good place other than "I'm right up against the wall and there is a E11S sized triangle for the melee to stand I'm sorry this is the best I can do when there are 4 puddles around me"
Levi
and yeah I've been running into a lot of "gap close to the boss, don't turn them around" tanks lately
Levi
like y'all are at a level high enough to have a gap closer
TENtacle :3c
for some reason, all the times i rolled into P6N on Primal and Materia, tanks turn the boss 90 degrees for the second chou ixou and it makes me miss my positionals
Levi
you should have learned "turn the boss around" by now
Levi
huh I haven't seen any tanks do that, just the occasional tank that gets disoriented after the Spinny but they just end up tanking Hegemone like, East instead of North
TENtacle :3c
yeah i only specifically saw this on Primal and Materia, nowhere else. i thought it was an odd quirk at first but then it happened a few more times with different tanks
Levi
is this Primal's long missing DC identity? "weird strats for normal content no other DC uses"
Levi
I guess I'll find out when my Primal alt is at a high enough level
Levi
anyway on the flip side I also see people getting bent out of shape about things that don't really matter like
Levi
guys you don't really need to bring the Bone Dragon north
Levi
maybe a couple steps but you don't have to drag it all the way
Levi
maybe if people actually hit the Skellies like they should you wouldn't have to worry about Skelly Bombs
Levi
it's not like you can hit the Bone Dragon while it's flopped over
Levi
I also think bringing Phlegethon all the way south is dumb but I get that it allows people to make LotA even more braindead than it already is
Levi
oh also another bad tank behavior that tilts me is

fucking pick up the adds in alliance raids (crystal tower raids, specifically)
Levi
like I am perpetually confused to why tanks will just let healers and dps just systematically die to Doga and Une Clones/Ninjas/Wolfbanes
Levi
btw I still think it's laughable that people still insist on ABC when they won't do either the A or C parts
Levi
and only half the people in B go in the belly
Levi
I will never forget the WoD run I had that wiped on Cerberus because only 2 DPS went into the belly and they wiped to the adds inside
Levi
anyway I don't expect people to know that like, the best place to tank the Adjudicator in Sunken Temple of Quarn (normal) is on either the east or west pad so that the Sun Juror add can be disposed of quickly and easily
Levi
but I do expect them to face bosses away and to avoid turning them too much, especially if it's a duty they've done before and have clearly done multiple times
Levi
I will very rarely take over aggro if I'm an offtank but sometimes the main tank is just so bad I have to do it
Levi
I'll pretty much only do it if deaths are being directly caused by the bad tank
Levi
and they won't listen to advice on how to Not Kill Their Party Using This One Trick
Levi
(the trick is turning the boss around)
Levi
anyway the actual hardest thing to teach tanks to do is tank swap, which I have to do several times a month thanks to Fancy Horse Grind Roulette
Levi
(805 duties left to go)
Levi
I would not wish "try to teach DF tanks how to do the Ramuh EX swap" on my worst enemy
Levi
the best I've been able to get is "one tank tanks ramuh for 45 seconds while the other does it for 15 seconds because they can't figure out how to space out their debuff"
Levi
which technically works, but also makes the fight harder
Levi
because one tank is on a super short timer
Levi
anyway if u ever get me as a main tank in duty if I ever do something weird while tanking there's usually a reason for it
Levi
most duties I have plans, and also backup plans in case of situations like "my dungeon healer seems to operate on a 5 second delay"
