I think Thad would actually put in effort, weirdly enough. Mostly because he just wants a good grade, and to have the teacher acknowledge how capable he is, but still.

Danny on the other hand is going to hate this thing. I'm tempted to actually do my idea of having it keep shocking him every time he picks it up because it's malfunctioning. Then three days in it develops a "second" more awful power.

I don't know what that will be yet but I'll come up with something he would hate.

He might try and pawn it off on someone so he doesn't completely fail. And I'm awful because I kinda wish there was someone that could be like, "Huh, that's exactly what your parents did to you isn't it?"

Don't know if I'll have Danny partnered up with anyone for this, since that feels like a lot for someone else to deal with. But Thad would probably be a good one to partner up with someone. He needs the CR and he'll actually be helpful.

boop snoot riot : I'd be down for that. He would be more likely to help if he's actually paired up with someone, cuz he wouldn't want to screw them over. But if that thing is only ever malfunction and shocking him he'd probably be like "this thing clearly hates me" and becomes more and more of an absentee dad.
