https://images.plurk.com/1hKVUDI0DO0TsSRS1Xeq1x.jpg Columbia House was hooking folks well before CDs.

Seriously? Porter Wagoner is on here twice?
PlurkDevi
Also, this is how I got my first Star Wars soundtrack. I was so excited because I had seen the LP and knew it came with a stupendous poster that I could mount on my childhood bedroom wall.
PlurkDevi
My parents ordered it from Columbia House and I endured what seemed like months of waiting for its arrival.
PlurkDevi
Imagine the letdown when I received the 8-track version.
PlurkDevi
No poster.
PlurkDevi
And "Cantina Band" was cut in half.

lawl damn. You got gipped!
NewYearSameMe
I worked across the street from there, their executives used to come in for lunch and dinner
PlurkDevi
I don't think Pink Floyd ever caved to Columbia House. Their albums were never available.

Fruit ridge avenue baby

In the 80s one or their VPs offered me like 10K to marry his son so he could have citizenship and offered me a Mercedes if I gave him a son

It's Gidge's origin story!
PlurkDevi
I joined Columbia House's laserdisc club. I ordered the letterboxed version of 2001:A Space Odyssey. They sent me the pan-and-scan version.
Gingo!
Oh, they were hooking people well before 8-tracks! My parents got into this briefly: https://images.plurk.com/5ZEXItBrvECjCaUPofLO7D.png

I propped it in the corner and glared at it over the weekend. Then I sent it back.
Gingo!
I did the record club myself 4 or 5 times. in those days you just moved (a frequent occurence in my circles) and signed up again at the new address!

I belonged to cassette club and dvd club

It was a really good deal if you fulfilled your obligation and quit. As soon as you quit they'd beg you to return by offering another incredible deal. Rinse and repeat.
PlurkDevi
Columbia House was the last outlet to offer 8-track and reel-to-reel tapes.
PlurkDevi
They were still selling them long after they had vanished from stores.
Gingo!
and long after you couldn't get either kind of player, as I recall
PlurkDevi
Someone bought their IP and indicia: Columbia House
Gingo!
maybe I'm out of touch, but I haven't heard of a lot of those movies, and haven't heard a lot of good about many of the rest
ᗩNUBIS
my first CD i bought from Columbia was Enya's Shepherd Moons (haha)
PlurkDevi
I'm sure I bought an Enya CD from Columbia House.
PlurkDevi
And I'm equally sure that it sounded just like the Enya album that preceded it lol
PlurkDevi
Gingo! I recognize about half of them. And that site is a really weak effort. They aren't even being consistent with the imagery https://images.plurk.com/5JcY9IyO3RShalbKsAweDJ.jpg
Gingo!
They're owned by a company called Edge Line Ventures, LLC, who operate out of Pennsylvania (which is suspicious enough). They bought the rights to the service from another company called Filmed Entertainment, Inc., which filed for bankruptcy in 2015, and divested themselves of their assets in 2017
PlurkDevi
They sure do have an impressive corporate headquarters! https://images.plurk.com/2MIhC1slaMc5V1sn9nQfrC.jpg
Gingo!
PlurkDevi : I'd work there... (LOL)
yellow
I'm worth more than $10,000 and a Mercedes! How do you like me now, Dad?!!!
