it is in fact a fantastic design choice to keep the text in the middle, scaled to not have to physically turn your head to read and the contents table to the side.

My first reaction was "Eugh redesign" and then immediately calmed down the second I realized the article I was looking at was centered and in a reasonable frame for reading without having to turn my head at all.

I'm torn on it tbh, since. Visually I very much hate it, but it's a massive improvement as far as page layout and ease of navigation is concerned.

Because accessibility. I would guess the current iteration requires more juice on connecting computers.

for their next trick I hope they go to Justified margins instead of Align Left when it comes to the body of the articles themselves.

Because it's a lot more obvious on the new layout and it bothers me like you would not believe.
