me: okay, so I'm pre-diabetic, thank you for the information. what do I do about it? doctor: eat better. me: and how do I do that? doctor: ...eat better. me: explain further.
I have plenty of resources, I've talked to a dietician about diabetes, my aunt literally works for weight watchers and knows everything there is to know on the subject
Ah yes, "eat better", the advice that often in our society implies heavy consumption of fruit, aka the actual worst thing to recommend diabetics consume in excess
Fruit have sugars in them but so does, like, all food. Sugars are what our bodies consume as calories. Fruit also tend to be high in nutrients and in fibre, and fibre is like (this is a simplification) anti-sugar because it slows down your digestive process, which makes your sugar rise less when you eat.
In general it's less useful to think in terms of 'good foods' and 'bad foods' and more in terms of 'is most of my calories for the day coming from nutritionally dense foods'. You have to eat something, whatever you eat is going to put sugar into your system, so make sure the sugar is coming with something worthwhile.
doctor: eat better.
me: and how do I do that?
doctor: ...eat better.
me: explain further.
