when i was 15, i started watching my dad's west wing dvds for reasons that i don't fully remember now - my interest in politics and political fiction was at about a -5, and i think i just wanted something to watch at his house besides my x-files dvds

i liked it okay throughout the first season; the characters bounced off each other well and the funny bits vibed well with my sense of humor, but i didn't really get into it

and then i hit the first season finale (the shooting at the speech in dc/josh getting hit), and it was just like. a switch flipped. i have such vivid memories of leisurely watching 90% of this episode the way i'd been leisurely watching the rest of the show, but then hitting that part at the end and being transfixed, and absolutely needing to

sneak downstairs (at like 1am on a school night) to grab the second season boxset so that i could keep watching and find out what happened

it was the first time a piece of media other than a book made me go "oh my god this is good. this thing i'm seeing unfolding in front of me is just so well done and i absolutely cannot stop now because i don't know what's going to happen next and i need to"

when i get into things now, i generally don't go in blind: something piques my interest because i've seen a ton of tumblr posts about it, or i've read people's liveplurks of it, or i've rped with characters from it

i don't avoid spoilers because most of the time, being spoiled doesn't ruin my enjoyment of something; i actually really enjoy the anticipation of knowing that something i've read about is coming, or seeing an event that's been discussed in rp threads play out

but i've been watching more person of interest today, fully spoiled and knowing what's coming, and i was suddenly struck with remembering how it felt to go into that west wing season finale blind, and sort of wishing i could have had that experience with the poi episode "if-then-else"

(POI was great because of that...which is how I got to watch it. The old-fashioned way: episodically. I never got spoiled, I wasn't talking to anyone in the fandom so it was aaaalwwaaays a surprise.)
