BruberryMuffin
[Books] So. I've been in the mood for reading lately. Rec me your favorite books/series. Especially if you think I might not have read them. I'm a fan of pretty much everything. Fantasy, sci fi, historical fiction, suspense, detective, etc.
BruberryMuffin
Or if you're looking for a reference, pick a genre and I'll give you a book/series.
That Black Cat
I'm a big Neil Gaiman fan. Good Omens, Neverwhere, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane are big faves of mine
That Black Cat
If you like short stories, Fragile Things and Trigger Warning are two of my favorite collections of his
BruberryMuffin
Gaiman is always good.
ChickletLARP
The Chronicles of Elantra. Doing my reread now.... it is SO GOOD
BruberryMuffin
...makes me want to listen to Neverwhere again.
ChickletLARP
Michelle Sagara West is the author. Highly serialized. Huge expansive world that just keeps growing
ChickletLARP
And I'm not just saying this cause I want more people to RP with me from that series(though that is always a perk)
BruberryMuffin
ChickletLARP : I have not read those yet. Adds to the list
BruberryMuffin
lol
ChickletLARP
THEY ARE SO GOOD. I can get you the reading order if you want.
BruberryMuffin
I rarely RP out of books.
ChickletLARP
One of the books has a lot of the F bomb, but it is almost nonexistent in the others.
ChickletLARP
That is fair
ChickletLARP
I... RP a lot out of books, lol
BruberryMuffin
I don't know why, but I don't.
Pipkin
I always rec Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series (or at least the first three, the fourth would have been better as a standalone and I haven't read anything after that because of that fact)
ChickletLARP
Different things call to different people. :-D
BruberryMuffin
Pipkin : I've read Uglies!
Pipkin
Uglies, Pretties, Specials, YA dystopia very similar to the classic Twilight Zone Ep 'Number 12 Looks Just Like You'
 HEROphelia 
discworld, vorkosigan, earthsea (on the off chance you haven't already read them)
Pipkin
OH, well okay then! You might be the first person who's even heard of 'em
That Black Cat
Animorphs is always good too. Quick reads and pretty intense for YA novels
Pipkin
John Dies At The End was entertaining, though kind of freaked myself out with it because I was playing the Nyantic game that came before PokeGo and there were uhhh some unsettling similarties
BruberryMuffin
Animorphs! Though I will always think of... Was it Shawn or Aaron Ashmore?
ChickletLARP
Love Animorphs.
That Black Cat
I think Shawn
BruberryMuffin
Pipkin : I've seen the movie. Never read the book.
That Black Cat
there's always also Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Beefier and varied, but very good.
Pipkin
Shawn I think, though Aaron was in an ep when they did an evil twin thing
Pipkin
I haven't seen't the movie yet, it's ben on my list five-ever
 HEROphelia 
um, the old man's war series has some sexism/male gaze, but it's not that much and it tapers off sharply after the first book, and the world (universe) building is super fun. i really enjoyed it.
Pipkin
I also enjoyed Redshirts by John Scalzi, especially if you can get Wil Wheaton's audiobook version of it
BruberryMuffin
I have the audiobook. Though I haven't been able to listen to audiobooks and do other things for a while.
 HEROphelia 
yeah, honestly everything i've read of his i've really enjoyed, but old man's war has i think half a dozen books and like half a million words, so it's a nice thing to get y our teeth sunk into.
 HEROphelia 
half a million words in total, not in each book. to be clear.
Pipkin
if you like William Gibson (and I know not everyone does) The Peripheral was real good (I haven't seen the Prime series to see how it lines up, but I am aware it exists)
That Black Cat
Do you like comics/graphic novels?
That Black Cat
cos that's a whole other avenue
That Black Cat
(first of which I'd recommend Saga)
ChickletLARP
OOOOOH yeah. Eflquest, for one >.>
That Black Cat
elfquest is a classic
BruberryMuffin
Cries
That Black Cat
correct me if I'm wrong but didn't that used to be a webcomic??
BruberryMuffin
So. My first taste of comics ever?
That Black Cat
go on
BruberryMuffin
The colorized book of the first arc of the Elfquest comics.
BruberryMuffin
My dad used to collect comics. I don't know what else he had, but I remember specifically reading that one.
ChickletLARP
I have pretty much every edition I could get my hands on of Elfquest.
BruberryMuffin
Also it's the other way around.
BruberryMuffin
It was a comic book first.
BruberryMuffin
I mean. I was reading them in the 80s, so.
BruberryMuffin
BruberryMuffin
Then they started posting the older ones online.
ChickletLARP
She redid some of the art when they posted it online, and added pages
 HEROphelia 
hitchhiker's guide books. always fun. ditto the dirk gently stuff.
BruberryMuffin
For some reason, I could not get my head around Dirk Gently. ...except the TV show.
 HEROphelia 
i reread i capture the castle recently. i'd forgotten how much i enjoyed that book, but it holds up.
 HEROphelia 
that's fair wrt gently. the narative style is incredibly quirky. which i think is why i like it, but i could absolutely see others not being into it.
BruberryMuffin
I might have to try it again. To be fair, the last time I tried to read it, I was probably a teenager.
That Black Cat
hhgtgg are fun books
That Black Cat
I really should finish them at some point
BruberryMuffin
I've got, like, three different versions? Audio plays, audiobooks.
BruberryMuffin
So to put this in perspective, I've been reading Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children and Jeffe Kennedy's Bonds of Magic and Renegades of Magic series.
That Black Cat
I've been told Magic 2.0 is also fun
 HEROphelia 
i mean, if it's been a while i'd give holistic detective agency like 30 pages or so and see how it feels. it might still be a bad fit, but it could read better now for you.
That Black Cat
and of course there's also podcasts that tell stories too
That Black Cat
I'll always recommend The Adventure Zone
SKELEREN
Warchild series by Karin Lowachee. Really good sci-fi, queer main characters, developed alien race and world
cluelessnu
I'm a bit fan of Juliet Marilliers who does historic fantasy? Largely centred around Celtic druids and such. Her first is Daughter of the Forest which is loosely based about the legend of the six swans
elbowbaggins
i rec the wayfarers series by becky chambers to anyone who will listen, they're a very cozy read
σρєяα gнσѕт
The Sands of Arawiya duology by Hafzah Faizal. it's fantasy based on ancient Arabia
𝔬𝔥 𝔤𝔯𝔢𝓎 𝔴𝔞𝔯𝔡𝔢𝔫
Sliding in here to mention 1) John Dies at the End has like... 4 other books in the same universe now I think. 2) because the first book was mainly a series of short stories and the movie had to pick and choose what it focused on, you can watch the movie and ultimately be entirely unspoiled for the end of the book!
Shard-o-lantern
Have you been suggested the Tarot Sequence by KD Edwards yet?
𝔬𝔥 𝔤𝔯𝔢𝓎 𝔴𝔞𝔯𝔡𝔢𝔫
Also because I need to say it every time someone asks for a rec: SWORDSPOINT BY ELLEN KUSHNER. Swordsman and his scholar lover get tangled up in the political machinations of the nobility as they try to manipulate the two of them for their own ends.
Maisfeeka
the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs - starting with Moon Called, The Other's series by Anne Bishop starting with Written in Red, anything by Juliette Marillier or Charles deLint
jackie lantern
Fairy Tale Inheritance and Twisted Tales both tweak fairy tales but one is historical romance and the other twists Disney in super interesting ways.
ChickletLARP
Maisfeeka : Oh gods, the Others. >.>
ChickletLARP
I.... may have a Vlad journal and a Crowgard journal.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
i came into to suggest stuff and am surprised to see the Uglies series suggested and i am so pleased.
BruberryMuffin
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
it really is
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
god i haven't read it in forever tho
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
i think specials was my fave
Pipkin
one of the rare YA Dystopia trilogies that had a satisfying ending imo
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
and if you haven't read them yet, The Song of Achilles, and Circe are both super good.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
Pipkin : truth
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is also pretty good, though it's not really fantasy/scifi/etc
Pipkin
(which I think was in part due to the fact of it being before the wave of EVERYTHING IS A TRILOGY NOW, or at the very least on the leading edge of it)
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
more just two poc dudes navigating their sexualities
BruberryMuffin
I am game for just about any genre.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
KJ Charles writes some fantastic historical fiction/fantasy
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
stephan from dup is from one of her series.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
and altho i love the charm of magpies books, i think i prefer her society of gentlemen books because it's bridgerton but gay
BruberryMuffin
More recs? Casey Duncan from Kelley Armstrong.
BruberryMuffin
She did Women of the Otherworld (also a good series), but this one is a non-supernatural/fantasy detective series.
Shard-o-lantern
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ : Also, Think of England and the Will Darling trilogy.
BruberryMuffin
And Laurie R. King and the Mary Russell series.
BruberryMuffin
If you like Sherlock Holmes.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
i will always suggest everything lynn flewelling wrote
BruberryMuffin
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ : You mean those things I've already read?
BruberryMuffin
Love Lynn Flewelling.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
i'm honestly considering re-reading either the tamir triad or her nightrunner series because /chef kiss
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
om i forgot you did!
BruberryMuffin
I knew people who played Alec and Seregil once upon a time.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
i still play alec on occasion and have a tamir/tobin journal
BruberryMuffin
Also knew a Thero. And had a character who loved flirting with him to tease him.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
thero
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
was he before or after traitor's moon?
BruberryMuffin
I...honestly don't remember.
BruberryMuffin
It's been that long.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
woah
BruberryMuffin
Probably more than 10 years ago.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
i am going to assume you've read diane wayne jones' stuff?
BruberryMuffin
I'm not sure I have, actually.
BruberryMuffin
I'm kind of all over the place with what I've read and what I haven't.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
the Chrestomanci books. she also wrote the novel Howl's Moving Castle and its sequels.
BruberryMuffin
Nope. Haven't read them.
BruberryMuffin
Oh, another rec. Doctrine of Labyrinths by Sarah Monette.
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
good stuff
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
oh, and if you like discworld and haven't read his YA series, about Tiffany Aching, those are good too
Maisfeeka
ChickletLARP I might just have a journal named Squeakytoy
ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇ ᴅɪᴄᴋʜᴇᴀᴅ
finally, if you're into manga, i recommend Seraph of the End. it's really the only series manga/anime wise i keep up with these days
ChickletLARP
Maisfeeka : OMG can we play?!
Maisfeeka
All I have is the name at the moment. And I doubt my ability to play her well, which is why I haven't completed it yet.
ChickletLARP
Well if you ever want, we can PSL so you can test her. Vlad is still a rough voice for me too
purkle archer
I've been reccing to everyone The Once and Future Witches. it's a great story about a group of sisters it's set in the late 1800s and it's one of the best things I read last year
