Last night after dinner, Beeto asked to drive around so he could see the city lights. So we did, with me taking him around to see the twinkling Christmas lights in the neighborhood and then to the busy Ortigas area.
“I’ve missed the city lights” he said, referring to the busy billboards and the garish commercial signages.
He was also looking at the different people still walking around aimlessly or making their way home. “I’ve only seen one person smile. A dad trying to amuse his child. Why does everyone looked so stressed?”
I realized that I hadn’t noticed that because somehow I had just grown used to just not looking at people and avoiding all eye contact when navigating the streets of Manila.
We pointed out familiar corners of the metropolis we used to call home. There was the hospital he stayed at when he was struck with the mysterious ailment when he couldn’t move his legs. There was where had take out sashimi one night, this was where we parked when we tried a nearby restaurant, this is where we got his first pair of eyeglasses.
“I’ve missed the city lights” he said, referring to the busy billboards and the garish commercial signages.
