You're Quinner
here's a hot take: "put a speaker in the controller" was always a dumb ass idea
You're Quinner
when a game makes sound come out of the controller tto add immersion all it does is make me less immersed
You're Quinner
it reminds me that I am holding a controllerr
You're Quinner
and not being a part of the game's world
You're Quinner
the only exception is No More Heroes on the Wii
Where Is Harkan
I WAS ABOUT TO BRING THAT UP
You're Quinner
when I hear tinny sword sounds out of my dualshock I don't feel like I'm holding a sword
You're Quinner
I go "oh right, I'm holding a dualshock 4 playstation controller and it has a shitty little speaker in it"
oh i'm scary
for some reason I was tempted to disagree but like, yeah, no
oh i'm scary
it might be different if the speakers weren't shit ass garbage but then controllers would cost $200
You're Quinner
the smarter choice would have been to put mics in controllers
oh i'm scary
well, they did, broadly speaking
oh i'm scary
theoretical ideal use of controller speakers:
oh i'm scary
a Toy Story game where pulling Woody's string is some kind of mechanic
magnet
it also just makes them a pain to use on PC
magnet
no I do not want to switch to this new audio device
bitchin camaro
getting jumpscared by the controller as i start up devil may cry 5 again
boo(f)
did they use the controller speaker in ghost of tsushima because that's about the only time I can think of that it might have been used intuitively and not immediately taken me out of the moment.
You're Quinner
they did and I didn't care for it there either
oh i'm scary
actually come to think of it
oh i'm scary
okay no it'd be too big of a drain on the battery life
oh i'm scary
but I could see it being fun in, like, the Secret Third Good Star Fox Game just being used for all teammate radio chatter
oh i'm scary
because like
oh i'm scary
the shitty sound quality would feel aesthetically appropriate there
You're Quinner
I would rather be able to hear it clearly
You're Quinner
from the speakers that I have
You're Quinner
to play sound
You're Quinner
just put a shitty sound filter over it there
Ken
The PS5 DualSense has a mic with the speaker, and I can see its functional use for a lot of folks as a just. Simple communication replacement if they don't wanna use a headset.

But, I have headsets and discord, I just leave it muted all the time.
Ken
I think the "thwip" coming out of it in Spider-Man is kinda ... neat but I wouldn't cry if it didn't.
HOT TURKEY TAKE
WarioWare Smooth Moves does it decently for similar reasons as NMH: There's no immersion to pull you out of, you're already IMITATING picking up a phone, so your controller is now imitating making phone sounds in your ear
You're Quinner
that's exactly what a controller mic should be for - for people who want to play with voice chat but don't want to shell out $150 for a good headset
Ken
Yeah, and the DualSense can do that, so hey, there's that I suppose.
Ken
I DO hate every time I plug the DualSense into my PC and it takes me a full five minutes to figure out why the game's audio is coming out of the controller speaker though
You're Quinner
the windows audio device manager should have a "wait is this an AUDIO device or just a device that technically can do audio? am I an asshole?" function
moontouched
iirc in dishonored the heartbeat comes out of your controller which i thought was interesting, though idk how it works in practice
moontouched
but yeah controllers having speakers is silly, it only works for a few select gimmicks
RobotApocalypse
it makes controllers more expensive for the manufacturers to build without providing any appreciable benefit to the end-user
RobotApocalypse
mics in controllers, solid idea. speakers in controllers, nonsensical
skerple
ugh yeah I was setting up my DS4 to work with my PC and I had to go into the control panel and specifically tell Windows that I did not actually want the controller to function as an audio device
skerple
because otherwise it stole the audio from my headphones
