"you know how you always wanted to go to seaworld" slew me

HIKIKOMORTIS
The Sea World thing made me crack up so hard

beachcryptid
right?????

HIKIKOMORTIS
I miss the local Asian market, they had great produce and tons of cool snacks.

/pats

beachcryptid
we are lucky here, lots of local asian shops

HIKIKOMORTIS
I don’t think our Asian population is as big in my area. North half of the state is where most of the Asians live so they have a Mitsuwa. It’s like 2 hours away from me, sadly...

HIKIKOMORTIS
Otherwise I’d go there constantly.

beachcryptid
aw that's a pain

beachcryptid
my area has become INCREASINGLY chinese, like, mainlanders

beachcryptid
it used to be very Malaysia/Singaporean with dashes of Viet

beachcryptid
but now its mostly HK/Mainland Chinese

beachcryptid
so our shops have changed to match

HIKIKOMORTIS
What Asian ethnicity are you again? Malaysian?

beachcryptid
malaysian yep!

HIKIKOMORTIS
I always want to learn about different cultural cuisines but I have to be so careful about certain spices. I haven’t had Malaysian food yet though!

beachcryptid
malaysian food is a real mishmash haha! there's some EXTREMELY chinese dishes and some that are very almost indonesian or indian ... we're a melting pot! Same as Singapore tbh, the dishes we share are basically identical except for minor details

HIKIKOMORTIS
(Anything that tastes or smells like licorice/anise is an instant no, and I have a very low tolerance for chili pepper heat.)

beachcryptid
/pats I feel you, I can't eat chilli at all

HIKIKOMORTIS
Oh wow that’s cool!

beachcryptid
but that's one of the nice things about malaysian/singaporean cooking! Chilli is often on the side, so you can avoid it entirely unless you're specifically eating a curry or laksa

HIKIKOMORTIS
Yeah I have a cat’s tongue in regards to spice

beachcryptid
like, Hainanese Chicken Rice is not Hainanense, altho it WAS invented by Hainan migrants lol

beachcryptid
it's EMMINENTLY a Malaysia/Singaporean dish

beachcryptid
you go to Hainan and they look at you blankly

beachcryptid
they have some chicken & rice dishes but not like that

HIKIKOMORTIS
But I love lots of herbs. Bland food is awful. I avoided growing up with bland “white people” food thankfully. Dad’s Polish, he’s a great cook and loves seasoning.

HIKIKOMORTIS
Oooo I love chicken and rice both so I bet I’d like that.

beachcryptid
yes! it's main seasoning is ginger

beachcryptid
what makes a good chicken rice is the ginger

HIKIKOMORTIS
Oooo I love ginger

beachcryptid
saaame

beachcryptid
you can cook it at home, but it takes forever

HIKIKOMORTIS
I also want to try tsaoko powder

beachcryptid
my cousin made it once, and it took her so long she vowed to never do it again lol

beachcryptid
oooh what's that? I don't know that one

HIKIKOMORTIS
I wonder if you could use it in cookies or a spice cake since it’s a type of cardamom.

beachcryptid
ooooooh

HIKIKOMORTIS
Lanxangia tsaoko - Wikipedia

HIKIKOMORTIS
Tsaoko | Cao Guo | 草果 16 oz or 3.5oz

beachcryptid
ooooooooooooooooooooooh

HIKIKOMORTIS
I might order some, and I want to try sumac too.

beachcryptid
let me know how it goes if you do!

birthday snake
