Picking up where I left off with my Batman: The Animated Series watch-through with What Is Reality?

I really wish that this was under better circumstances, but Kevin Conroy is the definitive Batman as far as I'm concerned, so I wanted to do something.
megadoomer
I have no context going into this episode, so I'm not sure if this will be a Riddler episode, a Mad Hatter episode, or a Scarecrow episode. (Maybe Poison Ivy?)
megadoomer
Others on this disc include The Man Who Killed Batman, Mudslide, Zatanna, and Harley And Ivy.
c_for_characters
That's a hefty disc, episode wise. :-P
megadoomer
There's also a special feature on the voice actors on this disc.
c_for_characters
"So this really neat story from a villain's perspective, an absolutely gorgeous Clayface episode, Zatanna's intro, and the episode that literally reshaped an entire fandom for decades." :-P
c_for_characters
"Plus the, like, one episode that's kinda dated because it's tied to computer tech of the time."
megadoomer
Haha I think the only ones that I've seen before are Harley And Ivy and The Man Who Killed Batman, so I'm looking forward to seeing what else this has to offer!
megadoomer
Finished the voice actor special feature. I love the image of Mark Hamill in the voice booth, acting along with the Joker's lines, and hearing Kevin Conroy say that it's an honour to play Batman hits a little bit harder today than it would have a week or two ago.
megadoomer
Okay, so this is definitely a Riddler episode. (Also, I find it funny that their portrayal of the stock market is straight out of the 30's)
megadoomer
I like the idea that the Riddler seems to be trying to delete all evidence of his existence, but the virtual reality stuff seems a bit much.
Bolt Vanderhuge
It's very dated, yeah
Bolt Vanderhuge
XDD
Bolt Vanderhuge
Not one of the better TAS episodes
megadoomer
I thought it was all right, though I'm a little disappointed with the Riddler's motivation. (I figured he'd want a fresh start with a new identity)
megadoomer
Next up is "I Am The Night" - not sure what it's about, but that's a great title.
megadoomer
So far, the episode's looking at the question of if Batman's really doing enough or if he should hang up the cowl, which I didn't expect the show to deal with. (Though I probably should have)
c_for_characters
Because Bruce Wayne is a fully formed person, for ONCE, and this show remembers to engage with that.
megadoomer
Great episode, with a classic display of Bruce's guilt complex and a heartwarming ending.
megadoomer
Next is Off Balance.
Bolt Vanderhuge
I did really like I Am The Night, for sure.
Bolt Vanderhuge
It's an episode I grew more fond of as I got older
Bolt Vanderhuge
Conroy himself was particularly fond of the more human, emotional moments he got with the character, and I'd reckon I Am The Night would probably be an episode he would've been fond of too
megadoomer
Between someone being thrown off of the Statue of Liberty and surviving, and two of the henchmen using gas to "erase their own minds", it's pretty easy to tell that the show was struggling with censors haha
megadoomer
Wasn't expecting Talia al Ghul to show up so soon. (I knew she was introduced before Ra's was, but I didn't think it would be so far in advance) Now I'm under the assumption that the whole episode is a test from Ra's or Talia.
megadoomer
Up next: The Man Who Killed Batman
megadoomer
I know I've seen this before, but I don't know if I remember all of it.
c_for_characters
Yeah, they kept ramming their heads into the wall with the censors.
c_for_characters
And then started finding creative ways around. :-P
c_for_characters
This episode being an example of that.
c_for_characters
"If we don't SHOW the Joker dumping a guy in acid, we can get away with him doing it." :-P
