this guy came up and awkwardly asked for a seat next to me, apologizing the whole time

then he looked at me a second time and laughed, saying that he thought I was a woman so he felt weird about taking the seat next to me

but on closer inspection I was obviously a guy

I think that was the first time getting gendered by a stranger was affirming for both of us

me since, hey, I successfully read as a guy

that's not quite it for me; i aspire to be androgynous enough to cause those five seconds of confusion before someone settles on "oh he's just a really pretty guy"
