236 bees
[dracula] you know, for all this time i've thought Dracula Daily was someone (singular) who was reading and liveblogging their experience and everyone was just reading them discuss their feelings on the thing, and now I discover I've basically missed out on a 200k strong bookclub and i'm just gutted
236 bees
I MEAN I'VE READ THE BOOK
236 bees
AND I WAS LIKE 'OH COOL SOMEONE IS DISCUSSING THIS BOOK I SHOULD FIND THAT SOME DAY AND READ THEIR THOUGHTS THAT'S ALWAYS FUN' AND NO
236 bees
NO I WAS WRONG
236 bees
i'm actually going through the book again rn
beachcryptid
XD XD XD
236 bees
I WAS BEFORE I FOUND OUT ABOUT ALL OF THIS
236 bees
I'M SO DISAPPOINTED but at this point there doesn't seem much point there's like a week and a half left
236 bees
hopefully they do it again next year tho because it sounds like a really cool way to experience the book
beachcryptid
it really was!
beachcryptid
I'd never read Dracula before either, so this was a ride
236 bees
well there's a bit of the book left for you to experience so i assume you are still in agonies of waiting
236 bees
apparently there's discussion of doing frankensein a similar way
236 bees
and that one i haven't actually read and would be super down for
236 bees
i also already signed up for the screwtape letters which will be sent out next year lol
236 bees
which is also one i've read but not one i have for a while
beachcryptid
I ammmmmmmmmm I like. know roughly what happens, because this is Dracula, obvs, but also, I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WHY HAS THE BOAT NOT DOCKED etc
beachcryptid
I am also doing LOTR daily!
beachcryptid
it's called the LOTR newsletter, I believe
236 bees
i mean having read the book previously - earlier this year even and probably about the time this whole thing started just to ADD INSULT TO INJURY-
236 bees
anyway
beachcryptid
and while I know Frodo will wake up soon, also, it has been several days without an update I am in need
236 bees
having read the book previously and Vaguely Knowing The Story i still didn't see everything coming so
236 bees
XD
236 bees
when did this become a thing?? why haven't i heard of this being a thing earlier
236 bees
also i'm really surprised they could do this with lotr ngl
236 bees
like
beachcryptid
It started on the day the LOTR started! so Bilbo's birthday lol
236 bees
dracula is firmly public domain ofc
236 bees
but lotr very much isn't
beachcryptid
and it is very much "please don't tell the tolkien estate"
236 bees
or else amazon would have been even more insane
beachcryptid
XD
236 bees
XDDD
236 bees
man, i want the link
236 bees
but also why do i never hear about these things before they start up
beachcryptid
ask and you shall recieve
236 bees
also
236 bees
no spoilers but lol you're still in for a time
236 bees
/fingerguns
236 bees
ANYWAY
236 bees
i went through some of the tumblr tag today
236 bees
and you know while i understand people getting upset about how dr seward runs the asylum and his relationship with renfield and such as so many people seem to be i also like
236 bees
i feel like a lot of people who are so rabid about how terrible he is for abusive treatment or whatever do not know enough about the history of medicine and specifically the history of how mental illness was treated
236 bees
like man i'm not saying he's a saint or anything still
236 bees
but honestly, for the the time and the profession? Yeah I'm pretty sure he's at the high end of the bell curve on that one
236 bees
people have historically treated anyone with a mental illness really, really, really poorly
236 bees
and just the fact that he seems to genuinely regard his charges as some cross between a fascinating study and children he's genuinely fond of is just leaps and bounds better than most could have expected in a historical asylum
236 bees
which again doesn't really mean it's great but it's one of those product of its time things he really does look pretty darn progressive if you start looking at it from the angle of How Things Actually Used To Be
beachcryptid
yeah no I was also very confused about the reactions because I'm like that's pretty good practice for the time, actually.... XD
236 bees
like this thing got published about 30-40 years before icepick lobotomies started to become all the rage
236 bees
like that is what followed this as best practice and acceptable and desirable treatment that is after half a century of progress that's where the state of mental health care was at
236 bees
MENTAL HEALTH CARE, HISTORICALLY: BAD
236 bees
and so yeah all those folks on tumblr going on about abusive practices and all i'm like
236 bees
'yall have never looked into the history of asylums have you'
236 bees
anyway if this all got transposed strictly as is to modern times then yes a doctor treating his patients like dr seward does would frankly be very shocking and alarming but the world in the past like 130 years has made a great deal of progress on the 'mentally ill people have dignity and humanity too' front
236 bees
but yeah just the fact that dr seward seems to be genuinely invested in keeping his patients physically safe IS HONESTLY SUPER PROGRESSIVE OF HIM and it sucks that this is where the bar was set back in ye victorian times but also like
236 bees
that's where the bar was set in ye victorian times lol
236 bees
i have in the past 12 hours seen so many 'how could the harkers have remained friends with him after hearing the contents of his diary and knowing how he acts' and 'au where mina and renfield become friends after he survives but then how does he deal with the kindest person he knows metaphorically holding hands with the cruelest person' and i'm like
236 bees
I MEAN I GET WHY THIS TREATMENT UPSETS YOU BUT ALSO FR LOOK UP WHAT THE ALTERNATIVES WERE
beachcryptid
................................I got today's update and it's literally just a telegram reporting the ship location /shakes u I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ONNnnnnnn etc
236 bees
but you just got what is going on~
beachcryptid
/shakes uuuuuuuu
236 bees
ship location and everything!!
beachcryptid
BUT NO DRACULA
236 bees
psh it's fine he is on the ship, right?
236 bees
right?
beachcryptid
screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
beachcryptid
YOU SAY IT LIKE THAT AND I GET WORRIED
236 bees
its probably fine
236 bees
after all what could happen, right?
beachcryptid
..............now I'm REALLY worried /goes to bed
236 bees
CricketMomJenn
It'll probably happen again next year!
CricketMomJenn
Also, if you like fiction from that time period, Sherlock Holmes is going to start up soon
236 bees
ooo
236 bees
I have ALSO read a good deal of Holmes lol
236 bees
truth is less that I like classical fiction (tho I do) and more just that I like reading tho lol
CricketMomJenn
... which is also progressive in its own ways. Like Watson describes himself with symptoms of PTSD and regards cocaine and morphine (not used for pain management) as bad. When most still believe that's good medicine
CricketMomJenn
True, true
236 bees
you know it really is
236 bees
but Watson is Beloved regardless
CricketMomJenn
Also, it turns out that Arthur Conan Doyle and Bram Stoker were friends hahaha
CricketMomJenn
Watson is a good
236 bees
but yeah that's like
236 bees
idk I feel like most adaptations Struggle to address sherlock's drug habit in any way that feels at all authentic
236 bees
....................... actually
236 bees
holy crap man I am not a fan of all the ~headcanon~ takes of like
236 bees
x character is y label because i want them to be
236 bees
but hot take holmes possibly had adhd
236 bees
man hyperfixates on crime like a maniac and when he doesnt have anything he can focus on he takes cocaine, a stimulant
236 bees
I mean he also takes morphine which iirc is a depressive drug so the theory is probably no good from the start lol
236 bees
but nonetheless! interesting to consider
CricketMomJenn
He also takes cocaine lmao so
CricketMomJenn
Yeah, I've wondered if he's ADHD, too
CricketMomJenn
Jeremy Brett's Holmes most definitely was
236 bees
oh I'm sure hes neurodivergent in some way or another
236 bees
just because like
236 bees
you dont get like that with a normal brain
236 bees
BUT ANYWAY YES THE POINT THAT LED ME HERE was like
236 bees
most adaptations either ignore the drug use or look at it through like
236 bees
modern lens of drug addiction
236 bees
which isnt really how the stories treat it
236 bees
holmes was never a junkie
236 bees
it really is written more as form of self medication than needing a fix
CricketMomJenn
/nod
236 bees
which really isnt a take you hear of these days but it's also because how things like drugs and medicine are thought of have evolved so much
236 bees
like heck man they used to put cocaine in soda pop
236 bees
but a modern audience you cannot say that someone takes cocaine without their being an association immediately with being a junkie
236 bees
because it has been a very long time since people took cocaine casually and/or for legitimate medical reasons
236 bees
cause. you know.
236 bees
drugsowl.gif
236 bees
culturally we've shifted away from that point
236 bees
I wonder how modern audiences would feel if he was popping caffeine pills by the handful or something tho
beachcryptid
terrible
236 bees
WHAT
beachcryptid
I see u up there, laughing at my pain
236 bees
you say this like it surprises you
beachcryptid
...point
236 bees
I mean listen
236 bees
laughing at your pain is my last chance to wring enjoyment out of this
236 bees
beachcryptid
pft
236 bees
LOOK IF AFTER ALL THESE YEARS THIS ISNT WHAT YOU EXPECTED I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT TO TELL YOU
beachcryptid
I KNOW BUT ALSO I NEED TO YELL XD
CricketMomJenn
Hahahaha
