I mean, this is still a thing in modern society. We're not so far removed from the characters, just our institutions prevent a lot of the mess from popping up violently. Usually. Heck, Putin's invasion of Ukraine is an example of crude behavior in the modern world.

Just that speaking from an entertainment value, HOTD succeeds where the later seasons of GOT failed. Complicated characters working within the framework of their society. In GOT it became about characters speaking modern English and concerned with modern ethics that had no business in Westeros
