Year of the Cat
[Fanfic] I have spent the evening saving some fav fics from https://fanfiction.net given all the talk going around of it possibly going under for good in the future.
Year of the Cat
Since I find most of my fanfic through TVTropes these days, I've started with those.
Year of the Cat
Some of these are SUPER OLD, I'm finding Watchmen and Star Wars fics uploaded in 1999 (!!!!) that I remember with fondness.
Year of the Cat
Seems a shame to let this bit of fandom footprint disappear forever.
Year of the Cat
And I'm sure most people are looking on something they wrote literally twenty years ago and thinking how terrible it is but IDC. I like it so I'm gonna try to preserve what I can.
Year of the Cat
OMG I FOUND IT, THE TOY STORY FIC THAT STILL REDUCES ME TO TEARS! https://www.fanfiction.net/...
Year of the Cat
Which unfortunately is the answer to the question "What happens to toys in the Toy Story universe that get too old and worn out to be played with any longer?"
Year of the Cat
Other thing I've found that's actually kind of cute and I almost wish we'd bring it back: writing spin-offs/sequels/endings to fics already written.
Year of the Cat
I've found a couple in the where the second author saw the first one was never gonna finish a long fic and asked permission to write an ending to it, which was given so they did.
Year of the Cat
In another one, they full on wrote an entire chapters-long fic as a sequel to a fic someone already wrote, again asking permission and getting it to write it out.
Year of the Cat
It's kind of charming how someone would love an idea so much that they'd ask to continue on with that idea even if the original person was done with it.
Murder moogle
oh no, there's talk of FFN going under? I am ABSOLUTELY NOT SURPRISED but also darn it, there are fics that are only located there that I like to reread sometimes and I don't wanna go to the effoooorrrrt
Murder moogle
I'm going to be busy packing up to move and won't (shouldn't) have the time
ᴡɪɴᴄʜᴇꜱᴛᴇʀ ᴡɪʟᴅ
i went in and saved mine then just. pulled that embarrassment down lmao
𝕊𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕖 𝔸𝕔𝕖
lmao all my old old old SW fics are lost to the AOL forums, before FFN even existed, and thank god for that.

There is one SW fic I want to save on FFN (that I haven't already), but the link's on my PC.
𝕊𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕖 𝔸𝕔𝕖
What I still have on FFN... eh. I'm sure some YGO fan will save it. XD
Murder moogle
I only have one or two fics of my own that I feel any kind of desire to preserve.
Murder moogle
The rest can just. Quietly disappear into the ether.
Murder moogle
if someone else wants to save them, they're welcome to, but I feel no desire to look back on all the awful writing I did back then.

I get that looking back helps you see how much you've grown, but I wrote a lot of that stuff during a dark time in my life. I don't need the memories.

I'd moved all the fics of mine that I'd wanted tk.o keep to AO3 a while back/ The rest: if they go down with the site, I'll be okay with it, as they weren't my best wor
KrisKrampus
I'm tempted to go back and save a few faves by other authors, though.

The question is having the time and energy...

I've seen people talking about doing this and I've been wondering - does ao3 have a system for uploading fics by other people that you saved from a different site, or do you just upload it under your own account? and like make a note of it or smth
𝕊𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕖 𝔸𝕔𝕖
Not really; they just do a link to thing.
𝕊𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕖 𝔸𝕔𝕖
I've tried uploading something I've wanted to save before, with clear marks that I didn't write it and that this was from FFN and I wanted to save it, and I got smacked with a plagiarism warning.
