5. Is it better to hurt others before they hurt you or let yourself be walked all over and hurt by others?
edward sitting here like "okay, but there's a middle ground. you can be assertive and keep boundaries without being an asshole" (LOL) but if he was put between those two choices only? yeah, he'd pick the former
small letter
in that kind of extreme environment, edward would prioritize taking care of himself first, then he can focus on taking care of other people
small letter
if he let himself get walked all over, he'd just end up getting pissed off and eventually lose rationality -- and control over himself
small letter
and that is Not something he's okay with
small letter
(but edward is also someone who doesn't believe that people will Always end up hurting you. it happens, and it can happen a lot, but he sees the world as being inherently more mixed bag than all one thing or another)

15. Is lying to others to gain their approval more important than being genuine and hated?
edward wouldn't say one is more important than the other. he has made his living for the past 219 years working for the same eccentric and flawed family -- he knows that sometimes, you lie through your teeth and suck it up
small letter
yes mrs. cabot i'll go find emogene even though she can take care of herself and will come home when she's bored, it's fine
small letter
yes jack you can meet with the new hires even though there's a chance they'll see how nice your house is and get greedy. it's not a security risk at all
small letter
... but edward also knows that sometimes, you gotta speak your mind. sometimes it's the only way to get things done, and the best way to get things done
small letter
no jack you CAN'T meet with the new hires this time jesus christ stop making my job harder
small letter
(these are legit canon examples btw (LOL))
small letter
lying for approval is sometimes called "tact" and "keeping the bosses happy" and "networking" and "keeping your job"
small letter
... on a personal level though? removing all the job stuff?
small letter
edward is more inclined to be frank and speak his mind
small letter
17. Have you ever gotten sheer joy out of hurting someone else, either physically or mentally? To whom and why? Did it scare you?
excluding his Wild Youth here for a moment and focusing purely on adult edward, and even ghoul edward in particular...
small letter
yeah, yeah he has. he has definitely had some positive, happy emotions about scaring off or taking out some raiders or enemy mercenaries or what-have-you
small letter
there are times where some assholes make themselves huge pains in the neck and edward gets a personal satisfaction out of making them no longer a problem
small letter
he canonically has a line (hidden... somewhere, i can't remember where, and now i'll need to look it up after this) about how he doesn't like to kill unless he has to
small letter
... but there's a part of him deep down that is a bit of a savage. he doesn't like that part of him, but it doesn't really scare him. he's aware of it, so he takes steps to keep it from getting out of hand. but it's definitely there
small letter
(a savage as in like... reveling in the base nature of things)
small letter
7. You have the key to immortality in your hands. But not for free. If you want it, as a price, your worst enemy also gains immortality. Is it worth it?
edward doesnt really haaave a worst enemy? not personally
small letter
buuuut, if he did... that person would either have to have a long, vested history of antagonism with edward, or would be a very big and immediate threat
small letter
and edward would not want to give that side more firepower or lasting power (LOL)
small letter
immortality is not something he would seek out on purpose. he is age immortal, he has lived a very, very long time, and his bosses have lived twice as long as he has. he's seen the effects on a person firsthand and knows them very well
small letter
not dying is cool and all, and he doesn't have a deathwish? but he wouldn't mind passing up being 100% completely unable to die if it meant the biggest pain in his ass was guaranteed to become a permanent one
small letter
no thanks, he's fine
small letter
20. Are there people in this world who, no matter how much time and penitence is given, should never be forgiven?
this one is fun given the whole like, barge Thing
small letter
and how edward... doesnt really have strong opinions on this topic. just like. in general
small letter
in his view, people fuck up. it's a fact of life. some people are unrepentant assholes, and maybe those people need to be removed from everyone else they're threatening, one way or another
small letter
if that's through learning the errors of their ways and deciding to stop doing that, sure, he doesn't have a problem with that. if that's through being put in the ground... to edward? yeah, that's just how life goes sometimes
small letter
he doesn't like to kill if he can help it, but there's a degree of desensitization here just because of how the wasteland works
small letter
for a warden, whose job is to Literally help people find ways of being better versions of themselves... he's kind of neutral about the concept
small letter
now -- over time, he starts to get into it more. he gets more personally invested through the inmates he meets and the things he learns about their lives
small letter
that said -- on the topic of FORGIVENESS, especially? edward thinks that, yeah, sometimes, someone shouldn't be forgiven. at least, not by whoever it is that they hurt
small letter
but he also sees that as a personal matter instead of like... "life/the world shouldnt forgive them/everyone else should judge and hate them forever" or what have you
small letter
to him, not being forgiven isn't the end
small letter
28. How long would you wait for the one you love? A year? Fifteen years? Forever? Could you honestly be loyal to an unfulfilled love?
small letter
how long he'd wait would depend a lot on the relationship... the person... the situation... if the amount of time was known in advance...
small letter
like. he has the time. that's not the problem
small letter
but if this was an unexpected situation, there would be some kind of limit before edward would assume that they're like. dead
small letter
and then he'd go about the mourning process in his own way and move on
small letter
he isn't a "i'll wait for you forever if you go missing and never love anyone else again" kind of fella
small letter
he's not a big enough romantic for that (LOL)
small letter
pings for both floofdoodle and pharadyne now that i'm done. i am aware i must have rambled a lot throughout (LOL) so i apologize for that
floofdoodle
Rambling is totally ok So is being an asshole, Edward. Live your best life
small letter
edward accepts that hey, sometimes, you gotta be an asshole
small letter
he just wants to be an in-control-of-himself asshole if he has to be one
pharadyne
i love rambling. i want all the ramble.
small letter
it also occurs to me that i didnt address part of the first question
small letter
Is it better to hurt others before they hurt you isn't a philosophy in and of itself that really... appeals to edward?
small letter
not at this stage of his life, anyway
small letter
though when i think about it, when he was much, much younger, and still lacking stability in himself and his surroundings? he'd be like "yeah, this concept makes sense"
small letter
but it isn't the direction he automatically goes
small letter
edward's mindset is like... yeah, the world sucks. people suck. sometimes, you get hurt repeatedly by people who really have no business hurting you
small letter
but pre-emptive striking at shadows doesn't jive
small letter
back in those early days, his delinquincy and misbehavior wasn't with the intention of hurting other people before they hurt him. it was more about the stability he found with the wrong crowd, and the feeling of not having a place in the world, and so it was more out of -- apathy towards the world
small letter
than preventing expected hurt
small letter
he felt burdened, he felt pressured, he didn't know how to handle it and didn't have good outlets
small letter
/vague gestures
