reminder that ff1 was basically a dnd adventure (this is the only monster that was changed due to copyright reasons)

mind flayers are super copyrighted too but somehow they keep getting used almost unmodified even still

squid faces are harder to say 'oh they copying us' even if they clearly are

yeah mindflayers still exist in form if not in name nowdays, and couerls are technically public domain beasties even if all of their powers are cribbed from the D&D edition

they originate from a sci-fi story but they definitely take some influence from the dnd adaptation of them (as displacer beasts)
