Hazard Kitten
been watching Outlaw Star today, absolute banger of an OP, the series is - not so strong.
Hazard Kitten
it's fine save for some 'yikes that didn't age so good' (like the women's tournament episode) but definitely 'I can see why this bombed in Japan'
Hazard Kitten
also first time seeing the infamous hot spring episode, let's see how this goes.
Hazard Kitten
(bombed because there's other sci-fi series with lot of the same beats with much stronger writing)
Hazard Kitten
also Suzuka is just kind of... exists,
Hazard Kitten
you could pretty much remove her and not alter the plot one iota,
Doge-lover Joja
but there's a seat that needs filling
Hazard Kitten
honestly it wouldn't even take that much for her to be more relevant to the rest of the crew/plot
noah may cry
'through the night' is one of my favorite anime ops ever tbh
Hazard Kitten
Through the Night is a REALLY good OP
noah may cry
outlaw star exists in that childhood nostalgia place for me, but it absolutely does not hold up
Hazard Kitten
yeah, Suzuka gets hyped up in her debut episode, but she's basically a sexy lamp
Hazard Kitten
(even her fights are for the most part have no impact on the plot
Hazard Kitten
but yeah, out of lot of the toonami-debut shows I've been watching, this one is one I can definitely say does not hold up.
Hazard Kitten
Wing is good soap opera nonsense, G Gundam is hilariously cheesy, other than an obnoxious dub-only joke YYH really holds up, Bebop is a classic
Hazard Kitten
who the fuck is this vega-looking motherfucker stalking gene
Hazard Kitten
Okay the dirty video pay off is funny
Hazard Kitten
I think putting a finger on it, Outlaw Star doesn't really blend it's Sci-fi and it's Mystic elements too well despite the leyline being the end goal and the pirates throwing magic right off the bat
Hazard Kitten
there's long stretches between the magical elements and you can't get a bead on if it's supposed to be highly unusual or something just common enough not to be remarkable
Hazard Kitten
(also interesting is unlike most unhinged characters in Sci-fi, Harry McDoogal seem to get more stable the more he gets cyborged up)
Hazard Kitten
and another I think is - most of the villains other than the McDoogals and Khan are wasted or come out of nowhere.
Hazard Kitten
*MacDougals
Hazard Kitten
also I just 'How much did Joss Whedon take from this for Firefly'
Hazard Kitten
(aside from River being found in a box in the exact same manner as Melfina)
Hazard Kitten
plotting and pacing is the weak points, but the action scenes are great and has some amazing set pieces and background
AzureChrysanthemum
Interestingly as I understand Bebop didn't really land all that well in Japan either
Hazard Kitten
yeah from my understanding Bebop got an it's okay/middling reviews, but Outlaw Star outright bombed
