/ : So... found a potential market for some of my stories involving my exorcist-character having some less-crazy consultations. Been typing up one of 'em and finished the job.
Subject_013
Looking at typing the other, longer story over the next couple of days and send one of them off for consideration.

Also, been reading the most awesome Lovecraft-inspired novels I've read in a long time:
Providence Blue

I chose not to go to NecronomiCon this year, since the world still has too many pathogens for my liking, plus I had to buy a mattress earlier this year, and I'm still paying myself back for that. But!
Subject_013
This book reads like a love letter to Providence, RI, and reading it makes me feel like I'm there.

Also, the author does not hesitate to have highly critical views of Lovecraft, even featuring HPL as a character in some flashback scenes and kind of making him an ambiguous antagonist.
Subject_013
It's a very interesting take on the "HPL's cosmic terrors were REAALLL!!11" story that you find all over the weird fiction community.
Subject_013
I'm very tempted to donate a copy to the Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Bookstore.
ShaynaIsHere
Oooo!
Gotta love refreshing awareness like that.
ShaynaIsHere
And I hope the marketing goes well!

ShaynaIsHere : Thanks, hoping it does, since I've had so many setbacks compounding themselves.
Subject_013
Finished reading the book last night: WOW!!!
Subject_013
I'd almost call this book August Derleth-inspired rather than Lovecraft-inspired, since the author has a different take on the Elder Gods, viewing them far, far more benevolently.
Subject_013
Lovecraft portrayed the Elder Gods as either malevolent or just careless toward humanity. In Pinault's novel, the Elder Gods turn out to be benevolent beings who lost their way in the universe.
Vincent Gogh
Best of luck <3

awww
in fairness, Lovecraft's fear of the Other does lose quite a bit of its bite when the Elder Gods aren't malevolent...
Subject_013
It's less of a horror novel, though there's some scary moments, and more of a fantasy.
Vincent Gogh
and I think you should donate a copy
Subject_013
Also, in terms of Lovecraft criticism, it's on a par with Matt Ruff's Lovecraft Country: it hands the criticism with nuance.
Subject_013
Vincent Gogh : I'm definitely getting another copy and donating it! /grins/

Goodness knows I've seen some cringe-inducingly unnuanced takes on HPL. I mean, I accept critical attitudes toward HPL, however, if it reads like a strident post on Tumblr, my brain shuts down.
