I do not like the word Roguelite
Quinneapolis
because 1, it implies that the games it describes are lesser, dumbed-down experiences
Quinneapolis
and 2, barely any games in the older style of roguelike are coming out
Quinneapolis
call the new ones roguelikes and the old ones classic roguelikes, or just call them both roguelikes who cares
Quinneapolis
roguelite feels so condescending
Quinneapolis
like "if you aren't ready for a real roguelike, you can enjoy this baby game instead"
Niamh Vibes
Don't need that kind of dismissive vibe in your life
Quinneapolis
the way people apply the concepts put forward in Rogue has changed over the years
Doctor Ansem
Hmmmm.
Doctor Ansem
I had always understood 'lite' to mean 'it takes less things in common with Rogue' rather than 'the experience is lesser'
Doctor Ansem
Since 'Roguelike' is a more narrow 'dungeon crawler rpg with randomly generated levels, permadeath, movement as turns' and Roguelites apply 'procedural generation and permadeath' in very broad strokes.
Ken
I’ll be real I’ve never understood the difference but also I guess never looked too deeply as I bounce off Rogue-anything
Quinneapolis
my understanding is
Quinneapolis
Roguelike: Everything is procedurally generated and you lose everything on death
Quinneapolis
Roguelite: Everything is procedurally generated and you lose progress on death but can unlock advancement between runs to get stronger
RobotApocalypse
yeah my understanding is that roguelite has some form of progression that's kept between runs
RobotApocalypse
is the main difference
BattroidBattery
Rogue Legacy: we will combine a single life 'rogue' experience with 'legacy' mechanics where your achievements carry on to your next character
Everything after Rogue Legacy: 'roguelike' means it has legacy mechanics
