Atwood對科幻的定義應該是偏向認為科幻完全是科學的「幻想」而不具有任何(科學上)現實或可能發生的基礎,而她認為自己所描述的情節都是可能的。倪匡則相反,他認為他很注重幻想的情節與物件,即使脫離任何現實的科學解釋。在這點上,他更像是在寫推想小說(speculative fiction)而不是科幻。
