Atwood對科幻的定義應該是偏向認為科幻完全是科學的「幻想」而不具有任何（科學上）現實或可能發生的基礎，而她認為自己所描述的情節都是可能的。倪匡則相反，他認為他很注重幻想的情節與物件，即使脫離任何現實的科學解釋。在這點上，他更像是在寫推想小說（speculative fiction）而不是科幻。
