The Kolaidians are a race that was bioengineered to be servants

To ensure they could never revolt against their mastered, they were built from the ground up to be incompatible with the concept of cultivation

They revolted anyway, through socially manipulating their master or using poisons or other such underhanded tactics

And then they saw a galaxy full of people just like their former masters and were filled with a deep, bitter rage of jealousy

Through centuries of effort they have started to figure out ways to make up for their lack of soul arts

No instant transmission or temple ships or talisman spells

Instead they have warp drives and space ships and disruptor torpedoes

No superhuman strength but they have power armor

Concept two: THE CONSENSUS

They are a race of horrible big monsters with a hive mind

1: each member of the consensus does have its own mind and personality. The overmind is made by the agreement of all members

2: there are members of the species that don’t join the overmind because they don’t want to and that’s fine

They can’t cultivate soul arts on their own, however

Rather, the gestalt overmind cultivates

And then lets members borrow its power as needed

They’re generally good guys in so much as anyone in this setting is

The overmind will allow refugees from more shitty parts of the galaxy into its space, as long as they’re comfortable living in gross hives

They attach to your brain kinda like a babel fish and the telepathically talk to each other

Which means anyone who has one of these things can suddenly effortlessly communicate with anyone else who has one, so it’s almost more like a social media platform than a civilization
