Quinneapolis
She has been hired for a period of seven days to write a number of letters on Clara's behalf
Quinneapolis
https://images.plurk.com/7hTUzzTyGGfv8byrt71q5w.png This is Ann, Clara's daughter, age seven
Quinneapolis
Ann is very child, she thinks Violet is literally an animated doll because of her prosthetic hands
Quinneapolis
she is also upset at Violet for monopolizing her mother's time
Quinneapolis
because
Quinneapolis
Clara is terminally ill
Quinneapolis
and does not have a lot of time left
Quinneapolis
Ann demands to know what these letters are about because she can't imagine any answer that would mean that the letters are more important than her own daughter
Quinneapolis
but Violet refuses to discuss their contents or recipient on account of client confidentiality
Quinneapolis
eventually there is a big meltdown scene where Ann reveals that she thinks she's responsible for her mother's illness
Quinneapolis
verbatim, "Mom got sick because I'm a bad girl"
Quinneapolis
but Violet helps her come to terms with her mother's condition, and when she's done writing the letters, mom assures her that nothing in the world is more important than her daughter
Quinneapolis
she spends her remaining time with Ann, comfortable days full of love
Quinneapolis
then, Clara passes on
Quinneapolis
then, on her 8th birthday
Quinneapolis
Ann receives the first of the letters her mother was writing
Quinneapolis
speculating on how she's grown and what kind of things she must be doing now
Quinneapolis
then, on her 10th birthday, the next one
Quinneapolis
then again on her 14th, asking if she's fallen in love
Quinneapolis
another on her 16th, 18th, and 20th birthdays, affirming that she's sure Ann has grown into a wonderful adult
Quinneapolis
all of the letters she was writing were to be delivered to Ann over the next 50 years
Quinneapolis
to continue to be, in some small way, part of her life
Quinneapolis
after her death

violet evergarden........ is good
Quinneapolis
anyway some people think that the way to make your audience cry is to make sad, depressing things happening
Quinneapolis
but a melancholy, happy ending can be a hundred times more powerful
Quinneapolis
I didn't cry because clara died, I cried because she found a way to be with her daughter throughout her entire life after she died
Quinneapolis
the immense scope of her love
Frozen Time

I have literally never cried because something bad happened to a fictional character, and I have definitely cried because fictional characters did really life-affirming things.

I remembered this episode as I read it and started tearing up again

yeah melancholy bittersweet stuff always makes me cry, it's way more effective than just "a bad thing happened and now characters are upset"
