were they snapping turtles?

one of them (nearest the camera) was very much a getting slapped repeatedly in the face turtle; while the one just above and to the left of the upside-down turtle was the one which may have delivered the crucial righting flip.

not well up on identifying turtle species and would resort to searching books / internet like anyone else.
