Open log for Bart and the baby chickens!

of course
Spookitty
He's going to be so sad when one of dozen is a rooster. (vent-sexing is only 90% accurate at best.
Spookitty
🫶Churby🫶 Kat-El totally snuck in to nap with them.
🫶Churby🫶
that would be stressful for the chicks.
Spookitty
I suppose that can wait. But it's going to happen. Once they're used to him. He's probably wormed between the wall and the pen, then? Secure and closer to the interesting new things?
Spookitty
Black cat against black mesh makes it harder to see.
SKELEREN
Spookitty
SKELEREN Meet the adorableness you'll couch-surf with?
SKELEREN
I don't think Peter is cut out for farm life for long but he'll stay for a few weeks until I figure something else out hahaha
Spookitty
It's just a place he can. And with handling, some chickens can be downright snuggly. (you should have met the silkie rooster that came over for my nephew's farm-themed kid's party along with the mini horse his babysitter had. Cuddly boy.)
SKELEREN
aww
SKELEREN
Peter's just a city boy at heart
Spookitty
These will be better behaved than the pigeons...
Zilla Fieri
tiny fluffy friends
Spookitty
The seven foot tall kaiju can't be that intimidating, right?
Zilla Fieri
Not to them, he's not
Spookitty
Well right now they are in that state of napping every few moments.
fairygodmother
( a ) i'm still figuring out how to get balthier on here but I will
fairygodmother
( b ) i feel like you will appreciate this story. I was in Mexico for a writer's residency thing a few months ago and for SOME REASON the property had like 14 adult rabbits and a BROOD of baby rabbits (like seriously 16 or so)
fairygodmother
everyone else spent like a week trying to catch and pet rabbits and one day I just got a bunch of kitchen scraps from the cooks and climbed down in their patio enclosure thing and sat down and put food around me and twenty minutes later i had 10 fluffy baby friends
fairygodmother
and i stg everyone was like r u a witch
fairygodmother
me, a zookeeper's daughter: ??????? wtf were y'all trying to do
Spookitty
Never underestimate the power of treats. Carrot tops and veggie peelings are def the way to go.
fairygodmother
i miss the bunnies
Spookitty
Did you get the bucks neutered at least?
Spookitty
I still remember watching one of the vet shows where they had the horrific situation that the male got the female rabbit pregnant immediately after birth. Poor girl was in major distress from the strain.
fairygodmother
They weren't mine :/ or I would have
fairygodmother
the owner was VERY attentive to the rabbits though so I was not super worried. I do think some of the adults were fixed.
Spookitty
Ah. My thought was ferals. At least someone was mostly looking out.
fairygodmother
No, the weird owner loved rabbits
fairygodmother
He had like an INSANE art collection we're talking like. Originals of major major Latin American sculptors, like, $10,000 statues just
fairygodmother
hanging out in the indoor/outdoor living room
Spookitty
If nobody knows what they're worth, why worry?
fairygodmother
and then he loves rabbits so he had these huge very well cared for rabbits running the grounds and into the common spaces
fairygodmother
oh yeah it was delightful. It was a rental property and he lost his mind when I was like SIR
fairygodmother
SIR I KNOW WHAT THESE ARE
Spookitty
Also, most sculpture is cost-prohibitive to move safely.
fairygodmother
He didn't speak very good English and my Spanish is terrible so we chatted in French about rabbits and art and it was a weird ass night
fairygodmother
valid. These were mostly under 3 feet
fairygodmother
and apparently the overflow from his actual house
fairygodmother
i want to be him when i grow up
Spookitty
Can I crash in your guest house?
Spookitty
I'll even consider being an in-house artist...
fairygodmother
yes
fairygodmother
my dream is to have a big weird house and just have writers and artist friends come crash
fairygodmother
my husband's dream is the brood of rabbits so
fairygodmother
omg let me find you my other dream house it's absurd
Spookitty
So you'll have the fluffy to recharge creative batteries with love and every night will be like down-time at a con.
fairygodmother
fairygodmother
Spookitty : honestly being able to work really hard all day writing and workshopping then go pet fluff babies was amazing
Spookitty
I'll make sure my ginormous physical assist dog I keep saying I should get will have training so he just lays down and plays livestock guardian when he's off duty.
fairygodmother
bb i love him
fairygodmother
(I'm good with basically any animal that doesn't jump on me, which I know assist dogs do not)
fairygodmother
(we had great danes when I was a kid, and great pyrs later)
Spookitty
I don't tolerate animals who jump. I've shocked people by training their usually unmanageable pets that this is not okay just by body language and ignoring until they're under control.
fairygodmother
you are my favorite
fairygodmother
i HATE being touched when I don't want to be and it's amazing how many people are like "but he loves you" uhhh no. except, yeah, the dogs usually figure out I don't want to be jumped on and are happy to wait
Spookitty
I even taught a pair of parents who got stuck with a high-prey-drive English Staffordshire Terrier when their son's college pet couldn't be trusted around the new baby that she had some issues with insecurity.
Spookitty
I stopped trying harder when the "muzzle-licking" was limited to the knees of my pants for self-soothing while I sat with her.
Spookitty
I mean, it really did read as the subordinate pack individual begging for attention and reassurance.
fairygodmother
aww baby : (
Spookitty
It was mostly that she really was totally not a dominant animal but being left to just be, and it wasn't great for her. Once she started really getting the physical energy out and some time she stopped a lot of the terrier terror problems. Although nobody was happy when she mauled the cat.
fairygodmother
Yeah I often end up with anxious animals liking to come lay on me teens too but we gotta work on the appropriate touch thing I steer clear of dogs because they're a lot of work, but I really enjoy them when we get to that place of understanding
fairygodmother
It drives me crazy how many people get high energy dogs who don't have high energy life styles
fairygodmother
you're setting them up for failure
Spookitty
I remember telling someone who got a pyr puppy because it's adorb in a townhome to get a trainer NOW.
Spookitty
Because between the amount of exercise that breed will need and managing an animal that has strong drives to herd and protect?
fairygodmother
yep yep yep i had an ex who, right after we decided to move in, wanted a puppy. had never had a dog. Again. My mother not only is a zookeeper but BRED and TRAINED dogs. My whole life.
fairygodmother
I was like do not get an active breed. Do not get a smart breed.
fairygodmother
He gets a fucking jack russell australian heeler mix
Spookitty
My best friend was literally herded to the spot where the isolated members of the herd wait for the vet and pinned by a pair of working pyrs for being a little under the weather.
fairygodmother
she of course became destructive by like 3 months. so I said to get a trainer. so he...put her in all day dog day care cause his mom would pay for it. I was like DON'T YOU'RE GOING TO TEACH HER THAT'S NORMAL AND SHE'S GONNA BE A DISASTER IN 3 MONTHS
fairygodmother
well guess what. So I started working her every day, even though I'm low energy, so we got to a place that she'd just chill with me b/c she knew we'd work, but she was nuts for him, and he was so mad at me
Spookitty
Yep. Because he taught her that was acceptable with him.
fairygodmother
Spookitty : woof. yeah they're smart and they're good at their jobs
fairygodmother
yep he was awful with her
fairygodmother
we broke up and I was so glad she ended up with a friend
fairygodmother
who was good with dogs.
fairygodmother
I had to get her a backpack and have her carry weight to wear her out but she loved it
Spookitty
Yep.
fairygodmother
it was ROUGH raising a puppy that I then didn't get to keep though
Spookitty
That's my big worry with getting a physical assist. Because the breeds that are best for that work are all highly active, and most are heavy-coated which I don't like in AZ.
Spookitty
And at 5'10" and 250lbs, I need someone substantial if I need to use a shoulder for help moving.
fairygodmother
I don't love heavy coated in AZ, but my mom has two great pyrs that do fine
fairygodmother
She actually trains for various therapy/assist things and they def like the work. I know they get a little miserable in the summer, but not to the level I expected. not like huskies
fairygodmother
and they live a little longer than danes. I love danes but 7-9 years is short, especially if you're putting that much training in
Spookitty
Is she the one with that gorgrous reading assistance pyr?
fairygodmother
probably
fairygodmother
we don't talk a lot so I'm not sure what she's up to but that sounds like her
Spookitty
I know there's one that visits Nanini.
fairygodmother
if his name is loki and he's just a mellow furball yes
fairygodmother
he's perfect because my sister picked him and she has a magical ability to pick dogs
Spookitty
Sounds right. I thought it was a good idea if it was a mellow pyr. Bed and friend in one.
fairygodmother
yeah i love mellow pyrs
fairygodmother
he's a great dog
fairygodmother
he was mellow even as a puppy
Spookitty
My big things is I need to get into a place where things will allow a dog reasonably well and then do my homework and find the resources to get an animal that will work. Like a lot of people would say poodle, but standards are such work.
fairygodmother
I can get my moms work info for you one of these days. They may be good to talk to and I know they had some programs to assist with costs of dogs and training too.
fairygodmother
But yeah I get needing the set up and to do homework
fairygodmother
I’m not a huge poodle fan. Their energy is a little too frenetic for me
Spookitty
They are worse than aussies and border collies for learning your patterns and using them against you.
Spookitty
fairygodmother Maybe David told Balthier about his visit and meeting the chicks and he's curious about how the other half lives?
🫶Churby🫶
Actually David's doing that on their date. And he's playing 'oh what if the chicks attack' to try and lure balthier.
Spookitty
HEEE
🫶Churby🫶
Spookitty
These are bantam chicks. So they'll be about three pounds fully grown.
Spookitty
Since he's getting them for eggs and pest control, being able to move them in the grazing coop was a good idea...
fairygodmother
lure balthier like he needs any encouragement past i want u to come no these ended up coinciding well
fairygodmother
also balthier is very proud of not being a total aristocratic dolt tyvm he has spent a lot of time in all sorts of lifestyle please give him shit for being fancy
Spookitty
He should totally get poop on his lace edgings....
fairygodmother
LOL
fairygodmother
he's not gonna wear lace he likes clothes too much but. but.
Spookitty
But even dressed down, he's wearing high-end fabrics.
Spookitty
The guy would want his t-shirts to be Egyptian or Pima cotton.
fairygodmother
...yeah. yeah.
fairygodmother
he's going to get JEANS for this adventure
fairygodmother
and im not sure he's going to like them at all
Spookitty
Bart will point out he wants boots if he's going to go in the fields. And something that is reinforced and won't snag.
Spookitty
We could always get him a pair of coveralls for farm visits.
Spookitty
With the caveat that no photos will ever be taken or something.
🫶Churby🫶
Meanwhile David will like jeans on him.
Spookitty
We'll know Balthier is truly smitten when David liking something is good enough for him to wear JEANS.
fairygodmother
^
fairygodmother
lmao i am trying to imagine a situation that would get him into coveralls
fairygodmother
i mean david could probably get him there but idk if he could do it yet, and not in front of someone Balthier presumably wants to not think he's a moron
fairygodmother
practical/work boots will be an easy sell at least
fairygodmother
he's going to suffer when it's too hot for pretty clothes
Spookitty
Yeah. Bart already is sure that when the other livestock come in eventually, he's not going to get that fashion plate to muck out.
🫶Churby🫶
David wouldn't even think to try tbh
🫶Churby🫶
David would get some for himself though.
Spookitty
Bart's got a compost pile going, so the manure goes in there, too.
Spookitty
David can get the compost, though, any time he needs.
