Echo — 06/26/2021 Yeah, I dimly remember it went Summerheart (shounen hero with unexamined privilege house)- fire, Springthorn (pushover wimps but at least they can probably get you weed house)- earth, Autumngale (hall monitor house)- air, Wintersting (Disney villain house)- water.
Yeah, Amrit got sorted into Wintersting primarily for being a little too interested in necromancy (which is illegal to practice) and being an obvious troublemaker.
But he refused to put his actual lips directly on a flute that half the incoming class has been slobbering on, have you people never heard of sanitation.
His parents are actively trying to have a replacement kid so they don't have to deal with this troublemaking little shit being their only heir- oh no. D:
Come to think of it, he doesn't even strictly need to be British for that- the Pyne family has been around for a while, they probably have historical rivals all over eastern Europe and the Asian subcontinent.
the magic world would probably see crowley as, essentially, New Money, and like.... yeah that family definitely goes in the Asshole House because we don't like him,
It's unclear if this is true or not, but in fairness it isn't any less plausible than Hazel's family and their claim to descent from the Lady of the Lake.
also one of our final bosses is like. Actual Literal Merlin, freed from his imprisonment, but also the version of the myth that points out merlin was basically a sex pest.
parent to kid, at start: everyone will think we are the baddies because we are wintersting, it is an unfair prejudice kid to parent at end: EVERYONE THINKS YOU'RE THE BADDIES BECAUSE YOU'RE RICH ASSHOLES WHO REINFORCE THE BELIEFS
Necromancy/soul-element magic is Highly Illegal, you're technically allowed to know about it but it's extremely frowned upon, and actually practicing it will earn you a lifetime jail sentence.
Amrit is practicing it in secret because he believes it can be used to do good and it's stupid to just write off an entire branch of magic out of historical and cultural prejudice.

: to follow up: i imagine fire is also a lot of stuff that just doesn't fall under other categories because it's ~the fire of life~ and shit, and no one is quite sure how the categorizations fall
Oh yeah, absolutely- people like to pretend that these are clear-cut rigid categories, but the truth is they're a lot murkier than anyone wants to admit.
hazel has absolutely lost multiple nights of sleep over "this spell clearly SHOULD be an earth spell but my analysis of the phoneme breakdown indicates it's a water spell, is my analysis wrong or is there a weird case here, aaaaaaagh"
The rest of the Arcanology club is immediately like "don't worry, we've got your back" and helps out- they're used to either not having money or not being able to trust their parents, so they know how to handle this.
He can’t afford fancy spell foci and components anymore so he starts using arcanology to figure out how many of them he actually NEEDS and how many can be replaced with something easier to find
[hazel] okay they say the candles have to be lit in each cardinal direction. what if they aren't lit? what if they're not exact? what if the candles aren't as long as they say we need?
figured out if you bit your tongue at a specific point in the fireball spell, it changes from 'fireball' to 'fireball that stops abruptly after a few feet'
I think he started at the school full of this idea that everyone would be constantly judging him and that if he wanted to be successful he could never show any weakness
