man it is kind of wild how many white sensitivity readers there are

obviously white ppl can still be members of oppressed groups in other ways but I keep hearing about them getting paid to act as sensitivity readers for, things with race as a key point in them

... you can get paid for that?

I guess I don't know if it's a paid position in every case I'm thinking of but I definitely know of at LEAST one where it is their regular job

I do also know of it being an unpaid request thing. usually when people are asking putting out a public call for people of the actual group being represented.

...if i wanted to have something read for racial sensitivity screening, i really wouldn't want a white person doing it

other kinds of sensitivity, sure. it's whatever. b. but racial?? nah.

I don't know if I'd even feel comfortable acting as a sensitivity reader for something about a Japanese American person because I don't think I have enough experience with the community and I'm Japanese American so it simply boggles the mind that white people can just be like 'sure, I'm qualified'

paid sensitivity readers are becoming more common, I see Twitter requests on paid opportunities every now and then

(Twitter requests by professional authors, presses, etc. not just randos I mean)

I've also seen people advertising their (paid) services as sensitivity readers but they're usually pretty clear on what areas they are able to function as a sensitivity reader

i have seen paid sensitivity readers a lot, just never offers/requests for white ones

(though i mean. clearly we could do with more non-cis sensitivity readers. that’s a thing.)

a good sensitivity reader will even specifically point out when the text needs insight that they’re not personally qualified to provide (source: friend who is a professional cultural consultant and sensitivity reader, among other work in ttrpgs)

obv I have never seen an offer/request specify they want a white person (tho in cases where they are asking for like mh or disability thngs or the like there just isn't race specified) I just have heard about a handful of projects over the years that have had a white sensitivity reader involved

but it's like largely secondhand stuff so I can't recount details. all that sticks in my memory is 'why have I heard about this multiple times'

i've seen sensitivity readers specifically irt disabilities, like autism sensitivity reading

i also know like exactly one race sensitivity reader but i do not know their race so idk.
