from my quick google search, the mythology/lore/backstory stuff.

make GRRM write all the lore and then hide it behind obtuse item descriptions

Yeah basically he created the backstory with some back & forth between him and the creative team obviously.

and then the creative team took over and used that framework to create the current state of the setting. At least that's my understanding

it skips having GRRM actually write anything but lets him exercise his 'human heart in a struggle against itself' muscles a bit
