1 - I don't see many specifics in there and I think what I did find suggested they were keeping it loosey goosey, but in terms of what magic characters can learn outside of their horizon powers, what's the deal with that
A lot of people draw inspiration from D&D spells! For both the Horizon stuff and learning Abraxas style magic. My character has been learning Academic Magic since the start, and I've been drawing inspiration from first level D&D spells.
so generally the timeframe is what you make of it (i.e. how experienced is your character?) but the idea is to focus on mastering one or two spells. i think magic is not supposed to be easy to pick up w/o practice (in typical ~training montage over a few months~ kinda deal)
being in the free cities there's prob a bit fewer resources for your character since they don't like magic there BUT i think he can still find books or a mage on the down low or just ask one of the summoned to teach
Yeah, like Nadine has been at it for about half a year now, and she can do a handful of small things proficiently. Because she's never used magic before, it doesn't come natural.
i think you can also have characters teach your character their own magic? i gotta double check but like...i believe geralt would be able to show dean witcher signs, for ex.
ok it only says "there will be opportunities" so idk if that's just something we gotta wait for to happen before we can do it or not, but it sounds like its somewhere out there on the horizon
Gotcha, okay cool. That makes sense. My plan for Dean has been to mostly hold off for a while because he wouldn't really "get" it, not because he wouldn't be capable but rather like a mental block holding him back. Once he finally demonstrates aptitude I was thinking about playing it like a real... emotion-based wildmagic type deal, I don't think he'd like
yeah i actually don't know how easy/hard it is to learn what variety of magic in the free cities. they're supposed to be suspicious of a lot of it so it might be worth hitting up the mods to ask what's most available for dean? I PERSONALLY haven't looked into this a lot because i just
I think he might be able to hit up Cas for some beginner concept things. Cas would take to magic 200000% faster than him I bet. Wuzzafuzzle correct me if i am wrong
BUT i love the idea of him learning a couple of useful things for a hunt, if not necessarily signs. i might ask abt teaching your own magic thing bc i like the idea of...dean using signs lmao
honestly that's all it is. they're specifically designed to be the simplest form of magic so that even the Witchers can use them and it only requires some concentration and a specific gesture
but
Haunted Boobs
: yeah I vibe this. I'm sticking with d&d inspired stuff for his horizon powers, and same hat on anything refined and controlled not coming naturally. I'll probably keep 99% of whatever he does learn wild magic-y or battle-y. Take it pretty slow.
okay I feel like I vibe this concept. potential fite witcher sign training, and other than that some real sloppy shit that honestly he probably can't do all that well or consistently until he's in an emotionally intense situation at which point ya boi explodes his feelings into wild magic
They have the concept of it in the sense that that's what common folk call "evil dimensions where demons potentially lurk." But in actuality the only "demon" which is confirmed in s2 are other entities from the other spheres (like voleth meir is a dark elf of the wild hunt, not actually a demon-demon in the sense of being a species)
I love playing with the idea of characters struggling a little to learn an entirely new skill. And there's a fun variety of magic here to play around with and figure out what suits your character. Like Nadine is doing Academic Magic because she's a teacher and having set spells with set outcomes is something she understands.
oh shit yeah academic magic sounds perfect for her then. and I 10/10 agree on the struggling to pick up a new skill thing. I'm about that slow-burn, and about tailoring aptitude based on what they're already naturally inclined toward
The idea that there's "good" and "evil" places, he's just like. They're dimensions and some of them are clearly shittier than others. Maybe we don't hang out here
another thing i'm thinking is like in terms of dedication to learning, dean would get frustrated with arcane/academic type magic and wouldn't feel compelled to put as much effort into it whereas battle-type witcher-adjacent shit he would straight up drive himself into the ground trying to learn
i think he does stuff better when he's not thinking about it, idk if that makes any sense but when it's pure reactionary intuitiony clutch impulse gotta save the fam type shit he's On It
for a separate experience I had jaskier learn one spell (someone taught him in the first event how to make illusionary birds) and I branched his skills based on literally this one spell, so over time he just got better at it practicing over the months until the birds became... actual birds he could summon and maintain
his plan was to use them for show effects when he performs but then [season 2 things happened where birds became an important symbol for him] so it all worked out really well
YEAH I THINK THEY MIGHT NOTICE
