There's a ton of overlap between European languages overall.

In the context of like articles or papers or w/e, you call other people you refer to a source. In Swedish, we call it referens. Which is very similar to the word refer, or reference, in English.

So in my mind

reference and source are synonyms in that way

except they're not really.
