Disney's FastPass: A Complicated History
I linked this before but I'm over an hour in and just
Cute Quinn
I'm completely suffocated by statistics and simulations
Cute Quinn
I have OPINIONS about fastpass
Cute Quinn
disney tried to make their lines go faster and they created a new kind of CLASS WARFARE
Cute Quinn
Fastpass doesn't even look like words anymore
Cute Quinn
the numbers never tell a complete picture
Cute Quinn
you need to behold the WHEELS OF KNOWLEDGE DISPARITY
Cute Quinn
pay attention to the one guy in the shapeland simulation who managed to go on 39 rides in one day
Cute Quinn
it's a slow burn video made uniquely for people like me
Cute Quinn
Fastpass is a billion-dollar monster actively devouring disneyworld
Cute Quinn
really the fundamental issue is that like
Cute Quinn
you can put all the apps and line systems you want
Cute Quinn
but the capacity of each ride won't change
Cute Quinn
nothing in the world is simple

I watched this when it dropped, it's so good
Vehrec
the first incarnation of fastpass, where you didn't have to pay, seemed to work great!

but the capacity of each ride won't change

I need to watch this video itself, but yeah the fundamental issue is the capacity.

Basically, the only real solution Disney has other than "make the line as fun as it can be", would be to literally double the ride... And they literally did that with at least one (Dumbo).
RobotApocalypse
as somebody who actually used the original fastpass system, it ruled, and i was increasingly dismayed to hear about each new iteration of it in the video
NekoInc, MSPM
And of course, Bob Chapek who is expertly copying the worst habits of Michael Eisner without the traits that saved the Disney company in the late 80s and early 90s...
RobotApocalypse
a perfect case study in how to run a good idea into the ground

My fundamental issue with FastPass+, may it rest in peace, is twofold.

First, bookings opened WAY TOO EARLY.
Second, Disney then proved they could do "FastPass but by phone" better with MaxPass except that was only at Disneyland and it was oddly priced (in part because it very specifically did not replace printed Fastpasses)
NekoInc, MSPM
Not sure if the video talks about it yet, probably won't be able to watch until this weekend, but from what I understand, Genie/genie+/Lightning Lane is basically a duplicate of Six Flags' Flashpass system right down to the three tiers, except it's phone based rather than operated by a retrofitted Tamagotchi
RobotApocalypse
it covers that, yeah
NekoInc, MSPM
Flashpass has some problems Disney won't have (like having to send you through the ride exit to board because it was hastily added), but overall it's. A thing.
NekoInc, MSPM
(as you can guess I HAVE OPINIONS HERE AND THEY'RE KINDA COMPLICATED)
NekoInc, MSPM
Actually. The biggest opinion is pretty simple: Disney Regional Entertainment got fucked over, and many of the problems of the parks today would be less severe with regional tastes of Disney Parks like DisneyQuest represented serving as a vent on demand
NekoInc, MSPM
But DisneyQuest was fucking abandoned basically out the gate and the placement of the first location was a gigantic "what was Eisner THINKING" moment that kneecapped the entire thing
