President Biden was asked on Thursday during a CNN Town Hall whether or not he could pledge that the U.S. would protect Taiwan. His answer was the only one I think the world wanted to hear... "Yes".

Biden explained, "I don't want a Cold war with China - I just want to make China understand that we are not going to step back, we are not going to change any of our views."

Two things. First, I think the American president needs to understand here. The U.S. has been in a cold war with China since at least four years before he took the oath of office, probably much longer, it was just then that this side realized it.

Secondly, the White House press secretary... needs to be informed that, no... we do not welcome "stiff competition" when the game is a global thermo-nuclear arms race deliverable through hypersonic means. That was probably the most awkward gaff ever messaged from that podium... and there have been many over many years.

It wired the US$83.5 million interest payment into a trustee account at Citibank on Thursday, according to multiple reports. That means the bondholders should receive the money before a deadline on Saturday.
